Liberty's, Union Street, Ryde

Liberty's

Liberty's Cafe Bar is a new feature of Union Street, a road undergoing a remarkable revival. With perhaps the greatest concentration of listed buildings on the Island, Union Street has intrigued visitors and locals alike with its mix of the mundane and the fanciful - extraordinary Victorian architecture above sometimes tawdry and decaying shops. But no longer. The boarded-up frontages are gone, the charity shops have fled to the upper High Street, and the Victorian arcades and shops have reawakened from their decades-long slumber behind plywood. Union Street can now boast more new cafés, bars and restaurants than any other place on the Isle of Wight. Liberty's, is, so far, the most remarkable and overt example of this transformation.

Review continues:

Entering the new premises, and, indeed, throughout their visit, your reviewers were amazed and delighted by the venue. In fact, Cat kept breaking off from eating just to gawp around. Other diners would have thought that a bit rude, if they hadn't been doing the same thing themselves. The Victorian shop-front and interior have been immaculately restored and rebuilt over two floors to make a subtle, stylish art-nouveau themed bar and restaurant which is respectful to the magnificent original building whilst still being a very practical eating-house. This is the sort of thing the National Trust strives to do well - rarely can it succeed as well as Liberty's has. The visitor, on arrival, enters the large comfortable bar - complete with lounging sofas. Then, up a magnificent ornate staircase that would not disgrace a New York department store, can be found the Grand Dining Room - and grand it is.

Your reviewers were amazed and delighted by the venue.

The food came after some delay, which gave Matt and Cat plenty of time to enjoy the plentiful atmosphere. The short menu had some very good choices, and several tempting specials were also on offer. Matt tackled an exquisite jerk chicken with lime sauce, whilst Cat essayed a deli-sized bowl of chicken pasta. Both meals were superbly presented, and of the best quality. Quantity, by contrast, was perhaps influenced by nouvelle cuisine - the portions were not vast; a bread roll or ciabatta would have been welcomed to soak up some of those delicious sauces. This minor shortfall was remedied in part by a splendid fresh and spicy winter berry tart with ice cream.

Liberty's has the innovative policy of excluding under-14s every day except Sunday, and thus it enters both the 'Family friendly' and 'Kid-free' categories.

The design of this restaurant has set a new standard for places to eat on the Isle of Wight. Your reviewers have regularly revisited since this successful first encounter: so far they have not been in any way disappointed.

Hello! Glad you liked it. But which criticisms? We were pretty happy with the place. This is one of only five entries in our 'We Love' category - there's very little to criticise about this fine eaterie. But you don't have to stand for our nonsense - we'd love to know what you think, too. Do tell!

Recently visited Liberty's and unfortunately we were very disappointed with the food. Service is good and food waiting times are very good but the food itself was bland, uninspiring, and well below the standard you would reasonably expect. The rib eye steak was disgraceful and no self respecting chef should have credited themselves with preparing it.
Will not be paying to eat there again.

I ate at Liberty's a couple of weeks ago in the evening with friends. I had the wild mushroom and blue cheese brulee for starters, which was tasty, although I found the breadcrumb topping a bit dry and powdery. For the main course I had sea bass which really was good. My partner was a bit disappointed with his venison toad in the hole because the batter was doughy rather than light. Puddings were scrumptious. Service was very good until the end when - as happens with so many restaurants - there was a long wait for the bill, even though there were plenty of staff around. But overall a good experience.

I really enjoy the food and the ambiance.Suits all tastes and diners whether alone or enjoyinging a party.
Food of a good standard and excellent list of wines to try.
On rare occasion when something was not as expected I complained-food was quickly changed with an apology. An alternative meal was offered.
Thanks Liberty-recommend you any time.
Your wine tasting is best kept a secret....hope that too many do not read this!!

We have regularly visited Liberty's since opening in December 2005 and have never been disapointed. We sometimes have just a wine (or 2 or 3!!), a snack or full main meal and it has always been excellent. We have sometimes had to wait a while for the food to arrive but have always been told of the wait in advance and when it has arrived always worth the wait. We love it and don't think there is anything to touch it. Staff always friendly, very knowledgeable and welcoming. Kirsty sometimes goes in on her tod and feels very comfortable there.

I ate at Libertys with two friends, and was not particularly impressed with the food. The risotto was woefully under seasoned, and not flavoursome at all, requiring liberal amounts of salt to render it palatable. The main course of duck on plum and ginger compote, was a large uncompromising lump of meat on a layer of plums, the presentation left a lot to be desired. The plums were simply sliced in half, and i could not detect even a hint of ginger. The new york baked cheesecake tasted suspiciously bought in, and was un-impressive. the decor is beautiful, and the staff for the most part are attentive and friendly, and i would go back, for a drink or coffee, but not to eat. For the same amount we spent on a meal for 3 we could have had a far superior meal at the Seaview Hotel, which i would thoroughly reccommend.

Furthermore, i would like to add that i am in total agreement with Matt and Cat in their dislike of establishments that charge extra for vegetables and potatoes - incorporate them into the price of the food!

Tallulah, I am sorry that you had a disappointing meal at Liberty's. We do believe our prices are competitve, as all our dishes are prepared using the freshest ingredients and where possible using local suppliers. We have no 'hidden extras' and all our main courses include vegetables and/or salad or potatoes and/or chunky chips.

We do not like anyone to leave unhappy and would ask if you are ot entirely happy with things to bring it to the attention of the staff who will be more than happy to try to sort things out.

Our talented kitchen team are passionate about the preparation, presentation and service of every dish that leaves the kitchen and want all our customers to leave contented and 'full'.

We are now working on a new menu and do hope that you will return to Liberty's and enjoy a great meal. We all take great pride in the food, drinks and service provided at Liberty's in a stylish, relaxed but vibrant atmoshpere.

Had lunch at Liberty's today. The warm camembert salad (large size) was so generous with the breaded camembert I probably should have stuck with the small size but hey, I was able to share it with my friend, who had also gone cheesy with the tomato and mozzarella stack and some skinny fries. The salad was dressed with a tangy and tasty sweet tomato chutney.

Very civilised.
Just about made room for a rhubarb brulée, which was good, except what's the point of adding half a strawberry for adornment unless it's done fresh at the last minute, post blow-torching? Mine looked tired and sad. And - something that doesn't seem to have changed since I last commented two years ago (two years?!) - the initially good service was let down towards the end of the meal. A wait to order desserts, and I went to the counter to pay the bill. Luckily we weren't in a big hurry.

Special mention for the ladies' "powder room" with the Molton Brown soap and hand lotion. Very civilised.

We had lunch here on Sunday. I had the Caesar Salad and my wife the Bembridge Crab. Both were excellent, freshly made and a simple combination of flavours that combined really well. Wine list was good too. This place is an absolute gem.

The decor is lovely and the food is amazing. But special mention should go to the chocolate which was out of this world. We will be back.

To be honest, I think Libery's sucks. At Christmas they served the worst roast potatoes I have ever seen (think half Maris Piper's), coupled with poor quality turkey. The manager also locked the bag I had left in her office so that none of the staff had access; I had to wait nearly half and hour for her to come back from her lunch break to retrieve it. Service is slow too.
