Archive review: Liberty's, Union Street, Ryde
NB: Liberty's is now closed.

Liberty's Cafe Bar is a new feature of Union Street, a road undergoing a remarkable revival. With perhaps the greatest concentration of listed buildings on the Island, Union Street has intrigued visitors and locals alike with its mix of the mundane and the fanciful - extraordinary Victorian architecture above sometimes tawdry and decaying shops. But no longer. The boarded-up frontages are gone, the charity shops have fled to the upper High Street, and the Victorian arcades and shops have reawakened from their decades-long slumber behind plywood. Union Street can now boast more new cafés, bars and restaurants than any other place on the Isle of Wight. Liberty's, is, so far, the most remarkable and overt example of this transformation.
Review continues:
Entering the new premises, and, indeed, throughout their visit, your reviewers were amazed and delighted by the venue. In fact, Cat kept breaking off from eating just to gawp around. Other diners would have thought that a bit rude, if they hadn't been doing the same thing themselves. The Victorian shop-front and interior have been immaculately restored and rebuilt over two floors to make a subtle, stylish art-nouveau themed bar and restaurant which is respectful to the magnificent original building whilst still being a very practical eating-house. This is the sort of thing the National Trust strives to do well - rarely can it succeed as well as Liberty's has. The visitor, on arrival, enters the large comfortable bar - complete with lounging sofas. Then, up a magnificent ornate staircase that would not disgrace a New York department store, can be found the Grand Dining Room - and grand it is.

The food came after some delay, which gave Matt and Cat plenty of time to enjoy the plentiful atmosphere. The short menu had some very good choices, and several tempting specials were also on offer. Matt tackled an exquisite jerk chicken with lime sauce, whilst Cat essayed a deli-sized bowl of chicken pasta. Both meals were superbly presented, and of the best quality. Quantity, by contrast, was perhaps influenced by nouvelle cuisine - the portions were not vast; a bread roll or ciabatta would have been welcomed to soak up some of those delicious sauces. This minor shortfall was remedied in part by a splendid fresh and spicy winter berry tart with ice cream.
Liberty's has the innovative policy of excluding under-14s every day except Sunday, and thus it enters both the 'Family friendly' and 'Kid-free' categories.
The design of this restaurant has set a new standard for places to eat on the Isle of Wight. Your reviewers have regularly revisited since this successful first encounter: so far they have not been in any way disappointed.

thanx again.

Will not be paying to eat there again.
Food of a good standard and excellent list of wines to try.
On rare occasion when something was not as expected I complained-food was quickly changed with an apology. An alternative meal was offered.
Thanks Liberty-recommend you any time.
Your wine tasting is best kept a secret....hope that too many do not read this!!
We do not like anyone to leave unhappy and would ask if you are ot entirely happy with things to bring it to the attention of the staff who will be more than happy to try to sort things out.
Our talented kitchen team are passionate about the preparation, presentation and service of every dish that leaves the kitchen and want all our customers to leave contented and 'full'.
We are now working on a new menu and do hope that you will return to Liberty's and enjoy a great meal. We all take great pride in the food, drinks and service provided at Liberty's in a stylish, relaxed but vibrant atmoshpere.
Special mention for the ladies' "powder room" with the Molton Brown soap and hand lotion. Very civilised.
My partner had the salmon and prawn salad and whilst there was nothing fundamentally wrong with it he found it again very average and uninspired, and not wanting to bang on about cost too much it was £9.50's worth of average.
The service was ok at the start but waned towards the end of the meal. My partner had to ask twice for another drink and at the end of the meal we had to seek out staff for the bill. The staff didn't seem that happy either...I've been a waitress, and I know as a job it can be really hard, even soul destroying at times but the odd smile here and there would be good.
I am disappointed with Liberty's and am not sure I'd give it another shot. I'd probably stick to Olivo's or Michalangelo's; neither are completely without fault but still far better in terms of service, atmosphere and food. I'm an easily pleased girl but Liberty's fell short.
I remember you and your partner as I served you myself, I also checked back on your food after a few minutes and was told everything was 'lovely', had you told me differently I would have been happy to do something for you. Unfortunately if customers do not bring to our attention at the time that they are not entirely pleased with something, we will not be aware there is a problem. It is a shame you didn't tell me that you weren't happy with your pasta as I would have changed it immediately for you.
We believe our prices are competitive and reflect the quality of food and service we deliver at Liberty's. We only use the freshest produce and wherever possible local suppliers. Our talented kitchen team prepare and create every dish we serve with passion and pride which means we don't serve cheap food - we serve great food.
I do hope you return to Liberty's in the future.

We were a little disappointed by the size of the seafood platter starter which was a sharing option, it was more like a largish one person starter. For main course, my partner chose lamb shank which he enjoyed and I opted for belly pork which was delicious! The food and drink prices are a little steep but the food is really good. We will go back, if only for the main course(at pay day!)
Well, it will be five years in December since we opened our doors and to celebrate we are having a very special birthday dinner party evening. We will be welcoming our guests (pre booked only, sorry!) with a perfectly chilled glass of champagne and exquisite canapes with our compliments, followed by a nine dish tasting menu, plus a glass of Chilean Merlot or Chardonnay. All this for the fantastic price of just £20 per head, so book in early and come and help celebrate our birthday - and raise a toast to Liberty's Cafe Bar.
I look forward to welcoming you to Liberty's to help us celebrate!
Annie
Matt and Cat respond: Thanks for your comments, Foodie. We were there this weekend too!
Oh, my other half still thinks Libertys has the best 'Ladies' in town with Molton Brown handwash and lotion - what that's all about I'm not sure.
We called last week & service had definitely slipped. Place not unduly busy but we were not met and having sat for quite a while we had to make our presence known to get served. A couple who came in after us, with a table reserved, were also fidgeting waiting for service. There appeared to be a new waitress on duty clearly not trained & apparently not supervised. Drinks service slow. Food, when it came, up to standard however. Not a death blow to us but certainly a warning shot. Hopefully a one off poor experience
We have some wonderful memories of evenings and lunches in here and just wanted to say thank you Libertys!
