The Wheatsheaf, Yarmouth

Situated in the picturesque port of Yarmouth is the Wheatsheaf Inn. If you’re looking for a quaint old pub in which to sip beer and enjoy views of horse-brasses, you’re too late here. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. What was a traditional pub has been upgraded and modernised. It’s a welcome improvement for the diners; the interior is stylish, comfortable and clean. It definitely looks more like a restaurant than a pub, although it still serves a reasonable pint and there is a public bar area which has a pool table and barstools if you prefer that. So recently had the modernisation been done, that at the time of our visit the floor was still partly covered in plywood as a temporary measure.
The food, sadly, does not quite live up to its surroundings. We made our choices from the not particularly adventurous menu and, after rather a long wait, the food was served. Although a generous portion, it was your usual pub fare. Matt’s burger with Stilton and garlic mayonnaise was more appetising than Cat’s spicy bean burger, which was in fact two tiny bean burgers nestling on a dry bap. Both meals came with a reasonable amount of basic salad garnish and piles of chips [yawn].
However, it’s a lovely looking place, the free newspapers are a nice touch, the toilets are beautifully decorated and there is a large no smoking area.
We were entertained to notice that in contrast to ‘The Folly‘, the Wheatsheaf has a far more prosaic way of naming tables – ours was prominently labelled on our bill ‘OPPOSITE LOO’.

After an awful chinese in Freshwater we needed a dessert to cheer us up. Wife had cheesecake of the day (Cherry) I had Bread & Butter Pudding of the day (Traditional) both were amazing, and along with some excellent coffees, made up for a poor dining experience earlier that day. Just noticed I wrote below in 2011 to return soon! This time we will return soon as the food coming out really looked great!!
Whenever we have guests we always end up taking them here because the menu is varied enough to please everyone & we’ve never had a bad meal. Probably not the venue for an intimate tete a tete, but otherwise …. highly recommended. It needs a re-visit!

just to start my comment by saying i was the head chef of the dark horse in brading when jez was there ,and now i am at the wheatsheaf ,The staff here are great and the food is excellent.So i would love to see what mat&kat have to say about us now look forward to your visit.
Visited with relatvies on Saturday 13th August for my husbands birthday celebration, having booked a table in advance. We were very disappointed on arrival as our table looked like it had been ‘squeezed’ in as an after thought, right by the opened entrance. The place was absolutely ‘rammed’ so much so that the poor waitresses struggled to get through the gaps to the tables, and we may as well have booked with the couple next to us as we were prety much joined together!
The food, once we placed our order, did come our very quickly, which we were surprised at due to the numbers, the food was OK, had much, better but also far worse. Would probably give another go ‘out of season’ when things have quietened down, although we were angry that they had seemed to have gotten rather greedy and cashing in on numbers. Personally it would have been a far better experience with 4/5 tables being removed, it definitely spoilt the evening for us and instead of staying on for further drinks and a chat (which was near impossible) we went to another local establishment instead.
We popped in for Tea on Friday and the 3 of us were very impressed by the food, the décor, prices and staff. My Son and I had burgers, chilli with jalapeños burger at £6.95, and cheese and bacon also at £6.95, my wife had a bowl of Singapore rice noodles at £8 – which she said was lovely, and it looked fantastic.
I would recommend this place as everything was fresh and served and presented very well, it’s little things like the quality of the burger, and the home made chilli on top and a handful of whole jalapeños, with sour cream served on the side, the open bun with fresh tasty salad on top, and it being such good value, especially in comparison to other pubs in Yarmouth (from the menus we saw) It reminded us of visiting the Pilot Boat a few years ago, both in décor and food (in quality, price and presentation).
Put it on your list for a re-visit M&C. We will be returning soon.
Had an excellent meal in the Wheatsheaf a few days ago at lunch time. The sizzlers were excellent, and well worth the money. Next time in the Isle of Wight will definitely eat there again.
This Pub has now been taken over by the previous Chef and his wife who was the Manager. Although the decor remains the same as described above, the food is now excellent along with the service. They endeavour to procure local produce where possible and the IOW beef is exceptional. The prices are extremely reasonable and the sizzlers excellent value for money. The place is popular, clean and friendly and all you really look for in a pub.
Went here for a daytime meal a few months ago, found it very pricey food aswell as drinks, and to be honest for what you pay the food is poor. Would not recommend it to anyone
