Matt and Cat aficionados might imagine that these reviews are only of sit-down eateries, although the presence of various chip shops and takeaways on these pages should have dispelled that preconception. Now, dear readers, Matt and Cat take a step even further with this, their first review of a burger van.

Perfectly positioned outside Howdens Joinery on Manners Way, Newport is a seemingly unnamed burger van. This is no greasy spoon affair; it has for years been the hub of a lunchtime community. On sunny days its patrons sit on the grassy verges and can even be seen enjoying their lunch at the newly refurbished Medina Riverside Park (by the river, adjacent to Riverbank Vets). In less clement weather, customers huddle under the sheltering awning inhaling the aroma of freshly cooked bacon, mushrooms, sausages and eggs.

With a simple range of food to choose from, but available in any combination, Cat could not decide between the wholesome sounding scrambled egg – made with IOW eggs no less – or the lean-looking bacon. Having eventually decided on eggs and mushrooms she changed her mind again after observing how laden Matt’s baguette was with cheese and bacon; finally opting for a bacon and mushroom bap. The bap was freshly warmed in the van’s oven then piled high with meat and mushrooms. Both Matt and Cat were impressed with how lean the bacon was and how generous the portion. There was a fine selection of traditional sauces available: ketchup, brown sauce, mustard, and more; although the bap and baguette were sufficiently moist and flavoursome without. The meal was rounded off with large (styrofoam) beakers of Twinings English Breakfast tea.

With plenty of adjacent free parking, this burger van experience was good value for money, the food was fresh, nice and hot and not at all greasy, the establishment was clean and the service was very friendly, even when challenged by Cat’s indecision!
