Archive review: Spice Lounge, Shanklin

The Spice Lounge has closed down, and a new venue has opened under the same name nearby. This review is an archive review referring to the former venue.

2010 saw a relaunch for one of Shanklin's most enduring eating-places: since 1983 known as the Maharaja, the latest name for this High Street stalwart is the Spice Lounge.

Spice Lounge, Shanklin, chutneys

This place has for many years been a great favourite of Matt and Cat's. Back in the day, before the idea of this website occurred to them, they regularly enjoyed a night of good food and friendly service around the Maharaja's tables. It wasn't too long before M & C felt the need to see whether the Spice Lounge was as good as its respected progenitor, so they treated junior reviewers Bill and Jack to a curry feast in Shanklin.

The Isle of Wight is well provided with Indian food - pretty much anywhere on the Island you're not too far from a curry or the like, and even some pubs make laudable efforts. But the problem with this - if it can be called a problem - is distinguishing one from another. Similar menus, similar décor, similar service and even similar names can sometimes cause one Indian offering to seem all too much like the next. This is often unfair - Matt and Cat can attest that some curry houses on the Island are a lot better than others. It also militates in favour of the new: a freshly launched establishment can draw custom, at least in the short term, by novelty value alone. Older, more established venues, however good, might find themselves falling behind the race, and then maybe be tempted to reinvent themselves. Was this what happened here? Was this just a fresh coat of paint on the same old Maharaja, or was there something genuinely new going on?

Review continues:

Spice Lounge, Shanklin, chicken badami

The Spice Lounge certainly looked the part - plenty of work has gone into rebranding the place, although, to be honest, it wasn't that bad before, having had a major refurbishment following a fire in 2009.

This was Indian food as it should be

When the diners walked in they were immediately given a warm greeting, and were seated with the cheery chat that has always characterised the Maharaja. Anyone who's not comfortable with the slickly impersonal, silent service that some Indian restaurants employ will be pleased with the professional but laid-back atmosphere at the Spice Lounge.

The menu was next for scrutiny, and it certainly looked different. Some new dishes were on display, plus a good few 'old favourites' and some entire new sections including a fish selection and thali. Cat was interested in the new special dishes, and picked out chicken badami, which looked similar to her old favourite moglai chicken: mild, creamy and nutty. Jack, fond of the familiar, chose a chicken balti; Matt and Bill were both keen to try the new thali menu, and chose a korai thali each.

Matt and Cat's bill
Poppudums and chutneys £1.20
2 x korai thali (offer price) £20.00
Chicken badami £9.50
Murgh balti ( inc pilau rice) £8.50
Garlic mushroom side £3.25
1 x Pilau rice £2.50
Dessert £3.75
2 x coffee £2.40
Cobra (pint) £4.15
Coke £1.75
Total £57.00

After poppadums and a decent tray of chutneys to whet their palettes, the diners were looking forward to the main dishes. Some interestingly hi-tech plate warmers arrived, all stainless steel and glass, and shortly afterwards a trolley rolled up and the dishes were deftly unloaded. Bill and Matt were both very impressed by the presentation of the thali trays. Each one had freshly-cut tomato and onion at the centre, in the shape of a rosebud no less. A tempting range of meat and vegetables surrounded the centrepiece, and proved to be as good as they looked.

Cat too was pleased with her rich badami sauce, which was filled with chunks of chicken, just as she liked it. A special mention must be made of the garlic mushroom side dish; it was particularly scrummy. The diners enjoyed a good meal, and by the end of it everyone had eaten their fill. This was Indian eating as it should be: freshly cooked, tasty food, from an enticing menu, well-presented and served.

Spice Lounge, Shanklin

Matt and Cat sat back and relaxed with some coffee, and as Jack had gorged himself to satiation on the delicious chicken balti it was left to Bill to essay a pudding from the dreaded photo-dessert menu. Although his first choice was not available, he was very happy with its substitute. During the choosing, a minor calamity occurred: a drink was spilled, a glass broke and a lap got wet. However, the wreckage was cleared away commendably efficiently and quickly, leaving the diners to continue their meal.

When the bill arrived, this was a pleasant surprise at less then £15 per head, including drinks. So yes, Matt and Cat conclude, Spice Lounge is different, and better. The best bits of the Maharaja have prevailed - the friendly service, decent food and lack of TV. The transformation to Maharaja Spice Lounge is subtle; the family behind the restaurant has built on its success making it a candidate for one of the best sit-down Indian restaurants on the Island. Highly recommended and well worth the trip to Shanklin.

When we are on holiday we like to visit tried and trusted restaurants as well as new ones. We had not eaten at the Spice Lounge before so visited it early on in the week. We would like to say how very impressed we were on that first visit. The door was held open by a young man with a very pleasant and welcoming smile. We were shown to our table and my chair was pulled out for me to sit down. Little things, but they mean a lot.

The decor was very clean and modern, with some interesting pictures on the walls, they looked as though they could have been embroidered. Indian music played gently in the background.

The food that we ordered arrived very quickly and was absolutely delicious, no complaints whatsoever. Everything was delivered with a very warm and genuine smile. The waiters understood everything we said (even when we could not quite understand what they were telling us). We were advised which dishes were 'hot' (as in spicy).

When we had finished the dishes were cleared away very efficiently and we had to actually ask for the bill as they seemed in no hurry for us to leave.

We liked the service and the food so much that we returned for a second evening later in the week. There were some daily specials, which looked good value, but we decided to still choose from the main menu. This did not present any problem whatsoever, our food still arrived very quickly and was absolutely delicious.

When we had finished the main course we were asked if we would like desert and/or coffee. Unfortunately with the food being so delicious we did not have room for any more.

When we were ready to leave my coat was taken from the back of my chair and held for me to put on and the door was held open as we left.

Such politeness, a rarity these days.

We have added this to our 'must visit again next year list'.

Visited the island last week; ate here and was very impressed. Food was good, and as Gillian said, staff very polite. I had to wait 1/2 hour for my main course, but the waiter apologised for this when it arrived.

For me, probably the best thing was how I was treated as a single diner. In many places when I'm on my own, I'm treated as if my custom isn't really that important, given the table pushed in the corner, hurried to pay the bill and leave the table for a couple, I assume.
But here it wasn't like that at all, I was greeted, given a table in the centre of the restaurant, staff came back to check if I was alright a couple of times, and I was made to feel that I could have sat there all evening if I wanted to do so, even though it was getting quite busy by this point.

All in all, a very good evening, and if I'd been visiting for longer, I would probably have returned later in the week.

My boyfriend and I decided to give this place a try and it turned out to be the worst decision ever.
The problems started from the very beginning when i phoned up to book a table i was told "wait 2 secs" and ended up waiting over a minute on the phone to book a table. When we arrived we were greeted by a polish girl who spoke hardly one word of english and showed us to our table and gave us a menu then she disappeard. We were the only ones in the restaurant. We sat there for nearly 5 minutes without being asked if we would like a drink so my boyfirend signalled to the other waiter who put his hands up to him saying "wait, wait"....this is totally unacceptable! We were ready to walk out then but decided to persevere. The girl returned to take our order of drinks. Another couple then walked into the empty restaurant and the girl showed them to their table which was 50CM AWAY FROM OURS. The couple asked if they could sit somewhere else, which proved to be problematical. Eventually they were shown to a different table. Seeing this happening and still no drink we got up and left the restaurant. QUITE SIMPLY THE POOREST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER COME ACROSS.

DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE BRIGHT LIGHTS OF THE RESTAURANT, THIS IS ONE TO AVOID.

After this trauma we decided to go to cinammon which is simply the best indian on the isle of wight, great service and great food

Hi Louise, First of all I humbly apologize for your traumatic experience at the Spice Lounge. If I do recall it was a Tuesday Evening, we have an Electronic POS system which handles our bookings, takeaway and restaurant bills and receipts, these items are relayed into the kitchen for faster, accurate time management. At the time of your telephone call we had problems logging into the system to take your booking, My waiter notified me of the situation and I took the phone and took your reservation mentally. After which I called my EPOS provider on their emergency line to rectify the problem. I had 23 reservation stored on the system for Tuesday Night due to one of our very popular promotion.
When you were seated and given menus the normal way we do is give you a minute or 2 to settle in and browse the menu, then we pop the question of drinks and popadoms to start your evening.
As for the reliance on the EPOS system had thrown our table management system into disarray, we were off the beaten track for 30 minutes, due to some of the reservation required a certain tables at a certain location of the restaurant.

The Polish Lady in question has a very good grasp of English, given the slight confusion over the EPOS failure she took the initiative to get your drinks. The other waiter tried to signal your request but this is not how we do things at the spice lounge.

Eventually the system was back online and we have taken lessons from this unfortunate incident at the cost of your dissatisfaction.

Please don't let this incident hold you back in trying us once more, if your not tempted by the lights of this place then maybe tempted by our sincere apology.

We went to the Spice Lounge Last night after a great evening at the Bestival. I was so shocked to see only a few kebab houses open in Shanklin and one Indian Restaurant which was our holy grail. We walked in and were delighted to hear that they were still serving. The chirpy waiter sat us down, deftly placed the napkin across our laps and presented us with the menu. We were so hungry we ordered immediately. We ordered a Mix Starter to share and for the main I had the Duck Biryani and my girlfriend had the Lamb Passanda. The starter was delicious and i normally don't have salad but this salad was really something else. We eagerly anticipated the main course and were presented with nice hot plates. The food was piping hot and the portions were very generous. One thing we both liked was the way in which our food was kept warm with a candle-lit glass food warmer and the presentation was first class. After finishing our meals we were presented with hot towels and a sour apple shot! very nice!
After we finished we reflected on our meal. We have dined in many Indian Restaurants and had Several Take Aways. I personally loved this place not just for their decor or delicious food or great service, but for the Flavours that was exploding in my mouth, and that is what Indian food should be about. This a truly an experienced restaurant, I only wish that they could deliver to my home town of Barking.
We both can't wait for next year's Bestival and The Spice Lounge :)

after reading matt and cats review, we have to say we agree with them 100%
We had the pleasure of dining at the Spice Lounge last night. So many vegetarian dishes to choose from. We loved the food, very tasty. We loved the decor, modern but not too OTT and yes pink is my favourite colour! The waiters and waitress' were very professional , not too intrusive but subtle enough to pick up on our slightest requirement. This place has so many offers it was very hard to choose from so we opted for the Meal for 2 offer which gave us a free bottle of wine. And I have to admit it was a very good bottle of red. Their is an atmosphere here that we haven't felt in a while, its like a local village inn / friends dinner party, very relaxing and a great evening for all the diners there. after reading matt and cats review, we have to say we agree with them 100%. This is the best place to go in Shanklin for Indian cuisine. We will definitely make this our number one choice.

Just love this place, we went last week after a gap of quite a few months but will not leave it so long next time! Such a warm and friendly service (much better than over the road) and they serve the best naan breads ever! Really good with children too, very sweet. Couldn't fault it. Food just wonderful especially the saag aloo and the array of food on the Thali platters. Yum!

I had a vegetable curry from here last night, very nice until I found a large bit of meat in it! I'm a vegetarian so when something says it doesn't have meat in it this is what I expect! I won't be eating here again any time soon.

had a great meal here tonight. we were the only diners but didn't feel rushed or unwelcome. dishes were nicely spiced with individual flavourss- not like the rather gloopy and mysterious dishes one encounters at some (indian) restaurants. all in all a pleasant experience, not cheap but worth every penny.

We were there last Sat (30th April) for my wife's birthday. Good job we booked as there was a huge rush of potential customers queuing soon after we were seated. (Shanklin town was very busy on the holiday Saturday evening). Very helpful chef when I called beforehand to enquire about whether they could cope with a gluten free diet (they could!), friendly greeting on arrival, friendly and helpful service. As a lot of people arrived at roughly the same time to be seated for meals, it took some time for our (freshly cooked) meals to be served - but it was worth the wait - delicious meals and we will be back. My only quibble was that I found the (medium strength) meal to be pretty warm - but we'll know for next time and they appear very accomodating - willing to adjust the hotness of the meals for each person as required. Highly recommended.
