Mamma Mia, Shanklin

Some considerable time ago, Cat was a regular patron of Pavarotti's Restaurant in Shanklin. Its Italian staff were very welcoming, the authentic Mediterranean food was excellent and flavoursome and the venue was in the style of La Scala - raffia-wrapped wine bottles and piped opera.

Mamma Mia

The proprietor of Pavarotti's opened a second eatery in Shanklin, the disappointingly short-lived Carrera's (now Chubby's Chunky Chip Shop) on Regent Street; a good spot for a lunchtime gossip over a thin pizza.

Ever-watchful of the goings-on in the Isle of Wight's restaurant world, Matt and Cat noticed the arrival of a new Italian restaurant in Shanklin and, as they had cause to be in that seaside town one night, decided to pay it a visit.

Review continues:

Ravioli mari and monte

Mamma Mia occupies a prominent position on the corner of Orchardleigh Road and the High Street, perfect for reeling in passing holiday trade. Cryptically, they have been for some time advertising themselves with a rather feeble tangled banner (see picture) which makes identifying the place a little tricky. Undeterred, Matt and Cat were able to take a chance on a coveted window seat and took their places eagerly to the strains of Winner Takes It All - not a reference to Jimmy Tarbuck, but the hit song by Abba. The Swedish Pop Gods were an unexpected musical accompaniment to the whole Mamma Mia experience and, although Matt and Cat are not avid Abba aficionados (or ABBAholics, as fanatics are known), they certainly prefer to tap their toes along to the multitudinous hits of the harmonious Euro-superstars than opera.

The menu had a good, if typical, range of Italian food; pasta, pizzas and salads. There was also a vast fish selection including stuffed trout, red snapper and 'ocean surprise' which was mostly various crustaceans with salad (£41). Cat was feeling hungry and chose ravioli sugo antico - Italian sausage with a garlic and tomato sauce. Matthew also plumped for ravioli, ravioli mari and monte - described as prawns, peppers, olives, mushrooms in garlic olive oil. Cat ordered a glass of red wine to wash down her sausage and was taken aback at the vast (250ml) glass. Perhaps she should have specified a small (125ml) drink. The habit of bars super-sizing drinks is a new and worrying phenomenon according to the government and, when checking this one drink on the NHS alcohol units calculator Cat was shocked to see that it potentially contained over three units of alcohol. Didn't stop her glugging it down though.

Ravioli sugo antico

The melodious sounds of Abba continued to warble through the speakers, competing with the yelling of one of the many children in the restaurant. Did her mother know? Probably, as Mamma Mia is well-patronised by families and in the commendable Italian tradition they were all given a hearty welcome by the staff. This venue definitely gets a child-friendly tick, although the menu does not seem to explicitly make any concessions to younger visitors, e.g. smaller portions.

The main courses were served very promptly. Cat's bowl was filled with a good pile of ravioli with a concentrated tomato sauce and chunks of spicy sausage. A generous spoonful of Parmesan cheese was proffered by the waiter, topping the dish off nicely. It was all very tasty but the ravioli had a certain familiarity about it. Was it freshly made pasta created in the restaurant's kitchen or - as Matt suspected - something more generic?

Although Cat was pretty pleased with her choice of dish, Matt was more scathing. He didn't like the pasta because of its decidedly un-homemade nature. It was exactly the same pasta and filling that Cat had in her dish. Frankly, it tasted and looked just like the 'fresh pasta' that one can buy half-dried in supermarkets, even down to the tasteless paste of the filling. What's more, ravioli is normally square, or at least flat. These were neither. He was also underwhelmed with his dish's pretty bland mari and monte sauce, counting a mere three prawns. There were some unannounced mussels and some curious rubbery things which tasted decidedly fishy (squid?) but the dish was not as anticipated, or advertised. He mumbled as he mopped up the fishy liquid with some very nice cheesy garlic bread.

Matt and Cat's bill
Ravioli sugo antico £8.50
Ravioli mari and monte £8.50
Garlic bread £3.90
White wine (glass) £2.50

More Abba tunes drifted through the air; Matt and Cat felt thankful for the music and did some synchronised nodding to 'Voulez-vous'. Cat finished off the glass of wine, Matt downed the rest of his Peroni beer and they looked out of the windows at the meandering pedestrians. M & C discussed what to have for pudding and decided that tiramisu was the only possible choice. Yet more Swedish songs yodelled their way through the ether - but no waiting staff were to be seen. 'I have a dream', said Cat, after some considerable time, '...it's of a marscapone and brandy dessert'. Finally catching the waiter's eye with an S.O.S. of her own, she asked for the tiramisu. Alas, there was none. Matt and Cat decided to leave but, by then, the waiter had cleared off before they could ask for the bill.

Yet more Abba - no waiter. You get the idea. Cat decided to take action and, making her way to the counter was tempted to shout "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme the bill". Money, money, money changed hands and Matt and Cat left to find coffee and pudding at Vernon Cottage, before finally taking their seats at Shanklin Theatre for 'two hours of chuckle therapy' with the legend that is Barry Cryer.

Matt and Cat were underwhelmed by Mamma Mia. The service was erratic, if amiable, and the food, whilst adequate, was neither particularly good nor especially cheap. There are several places across the Island where better Italian food can be had for as much or less - Olivo in Newport is perhaps the most obvious. Actually, it probably doesn't matter what Matt and Cat think - location is the name of the game and its extensive menu and friendly (if distracted) staff will probably be enough for Mamma Mia to succeed in this Summer Night City.

re 'Mamma Mia'- we visited when it had another name and the service and food was equally unimpressive (and not cheap) On that point, if you fancy a laugh, try The Mariners, Yarmouth. Coffee, tea and two, average pieces of cake - £9 !!

They've got their ravioli mixed up with their tortellini. Ravioli can actually be circular, semi circular, rectangular etc and any size, but when it's pinched up to become a little 'belly button' it's tortellini. What a shame they didn't serve home-made pasta - it's not difficult!!

Ooh - and a proper Italian restaurant will NEVER put parmesan on a seafood pasta.

i think the problem is although you are apparently food critics you dont seem to know much about food.

maybe you should stick to your mcdonalds or pizza hut and see how much a average dish will cost you there

Matt and Cat respond: thanks for the lesson in criticism, Stacey. We'll bear your advice in mind.

I ate here with some friends a few months back. I will say that the food wasn't spectacular, it was nice and all but there seemed to be so much salt added that we were all gasping for our overpriced bottle of mineral water by the end, I'd reccomend trying Pizza Express before trying here...Thumbs down.

I totally agree with the comments about the service and the food!!
Apparently this is the same guy mario that used to own Pavarotti's in the old village.
Me and my wife tried both italians in shanklin and would say that Pavarotti's has much more to offer in the way of menu selection, staff competence and quality of food.
Only my opinion

I've been there several times and overall i very much enjoyed both the food and the service. I think it really does just come down to your personal taste. There is no comparison with the quality of the pizzas, the beverages, especially the beer and water are imported and rare on the island and its a place for all the family. The parmesan cheese is served at the table by the waiter at the request of the customer, therefore it would appear that Matt decided to take his seafood pasta to a whole new level... (food critic?).

Still, i recommend you give it another try, everytime i visit the establishment it pleases me on a different level.

hi thank you all for your comments and feedback good and bad!
when matt and cat visited we had only been open under 5 weeks and were still in the process of getting everything good and running including finding good atentive staff!
the sighn on the window must have got hit by wind before we had a chance to spot it and turn it around!
The cheese on the seafood pasta must have been requested by matt? because my waiters do serve parmesan at the table and not in the kitchen..
since open we have changed a lot of things including the menu now having over 100 dishes on the menu plus daily changing specials, and also a fixed team of good atentive staff.
thank you for your comments and would like to say pop in and give it another try as a lot of things have changed since we first opened a few months ago.
thankx

We tried Mamma Mia's last night. Wasn't expecting much given the previous reviews, but were pleasantly surprised. We arrived at 8pm without booking and were lucky to get a table as a few parties coming in afterwards were turned away. Had a starter of mushrooms in a blue cheese sauce which was tasty (but had slightly too much parsley on top). Had a pizza for the main which looked handmade and was thin and crispy with plenty of topping. No room for pudding! Service was friendly, if a little rushed and we were neglected for a few minutes after the mains had been cleared. We were told that any leftover pizza could be boxed up to take home - nice touch. No major grumbles so will definately return.

unbelievably bad.....the people running this place think their customers are stupid.....well, ok there were 9 of us and we sat down the garlic bread was ok...but what was to follow with the mains was a joke!

My wife, brother-in-law, mother in law and I all ordred dover sole and veg....the veg came and to say it was old would be an understatement...prob 3 days, maybe more.....we returned them and ordred salad.....they forgot one, so requested that.....my mum in law noticed that her 'dover sole' was NOT dover sole nor was my brother in laws....in fact they were LEMON SOLE...the waitress or was it the owner was adamant it was dover sole (yet they were totally different to mine and my wifes and we know what dover sole look and taste like!!!), but the attitude of the staff was a joke and they talked to her like an idiot.....until i pointed out she owns 2 restaurant bars in london and has been in the restaurant trade over 40 years....and has certainly eaten more fish than the owner of this rubbish restaurant!!

this is THE worst italian restuarant ive ever been to
my daughter wouldnt eat her carbonara - i tried it and ill eat anything but that was rank - tasted like the sauce was off...same goes for the other meals.....sister in laws pizza was terrible....so, of 8 meals only my son's mussels seemed ok...we didnt pay for the 2 'dover non-soles'

i will be reporting them to the IOW dept who dished out the joke 5 star award....this is THE worst italian restuarant ive ever been to

it was packed in there...dont know why - the music blaring should have been a hint

in isle of wight - shanklin - we went to morgans which was ok, service was rubbish though (had to move our own tables!!) but no atmoshphere and too clinical for my liking and pavrotti's (which was good and relaxing)

RANT OVER!

Oh my god Steve, you are soooooo funny. I doubt you would know the difference between a battered cod and a piece of sausage.
Still, I know it`s tough being let down, but someone in your position should really speak up whilst having your meal rather than ranting about it on a website making untrue speculations and insulting remarks regarding staff, food or service.
I tell you this because the vegetables are made fresh on a daily basis due to their high demand specially since the owners of this restaurant turn over roughly 150 people a day during peak season. Yet, you come in unannounced, get kindly seated; don´t leave the table when you are supposed to, making others who have booked that table wait, and then because of one mishap slate it all of as rubbish when everyone else`s plates were clean. (except for the bones of your `non dover sole`).
To sum it up, there are plenty of `Italian`restaurants on the island, pick any one you may prefer, except this one. I´m sure you will enjoy their pizzas a lot more.

Good night, god bless.

we visited mamma mia`s two nights ago on our stay on the isle of wight, as we walked past my children had spotted the pizzas on a table by the window and begged us to go in!
all in all we really enjoyed our meal and the kids said they had eaten what they described as the biggest and bestest pizza ever!

my husband had the fresh rack of lamb served with saute potatoes and mix vegetables whilst i had the spaghetti marinara all meals cooked to perfection and very good value for money.
the service was very good and the staff extremely friendly, although the place was fully booked and extremely busy the waiter on the door kindly prepared us a table which happend to be available for just under one and a half hours.
i have viewed the other comments left by others but must say we didnt have any faults to comment on, everyone had a good meal and a good time. we were amazed at the cue on the door to try and get in to this place!

Had a good value meal here with my mates in March.Starter and main where tasty and filling I did however get served Tesco value Strawberry mousse for pudding and it was low calorie....yuk. I Know it was part of a special offer but I have never experienced this. We know the origin of the pud because we could see the packet through the hatch! What a shame, haven't felt like returning. Not sure I will.

Returned from a recent holiday on the Isle of Wight and found mamma mia's by luck, I have never wrote a reveiw before but the food was so fantastic I felt I had to, can't believe the negative vibes from other reviews. I had mussels in tomato and chilli sauce, hugh pile - gorgeous, then seabas done to perfection. The atmosphere was a bit chaotic but because we were with teenage kids they loved it (not the place for a quite romantic meal).

Despite some of the negative comments on here, Mamma Mia's is still going strong and for very good reason. The food is very good, the service is snappy and it's great value for money.

I lived in Italy for some while and I have to say that the pizzas here rival anything I have eaten over there.

Only one slight disappointment for me. I ordered risotto and was very surprised to find that it was made with Basmati rice. I queried it at the time and apparently the chef "prefers to do it that way". Well, it was tasty, but for me it is the short grain rice (Arborio or similar) that makes it a real risotto. Won't be ordering that again, but I will definitely be going back soon.

I would add that very many of our visitors have eaten there over this summer and only one had a complaint...everybody else has really enjoyed it.

The one complaint was about the Lobster thermiador being overdressed

I took my family here a few weeks ago, wish i was presented with a 3 course for 10 pounds offer. Our bill came to 90 quid or so thats with 2 children and 2 Adults. We ordered starters and mains and finished off with dessert. Luckily neither of us bought alcohol otherwise we would have been doing the washing up. I ordered spicy garlic pasta, which frankly tasted bland and more like a it came out of a packet and it had that awful monotoned flavour, i knew i should have gone for the fish!

I would give mama mia 2/10, it was extortionate and after reading the above comments it seems i must be in an elitist club to receive discounts, promotions or decent service.

regarding the last comment from john:
every customer is presented with a 3 course meal offer that commenced on 25th october if you then choose to order perhaps off the main menu then the prices are stated so no confusion could be had..
frankly to be honest i feel this is a false accusation simply to be hurtfull rather then a genuine feed back comment from a customer.

I live 1 minuute away from this restaurant and have eaten there on many occasions. I have absolutely no complaints whatsoever. Infact, we are going there tonight providing we can get a table and providing the 3 courses for a tenner is still available! At this hard time within the economy, it's places like Mamma Mias that allow you to have a nice evening out with your family without breaking the bank! I am looking forward to eating there later so well done guys....no complaints from the Newshams!

On a visit to relatives, we went to eat at Mamma Mia's this evening. There were 8 of us altogether. The meal was outstanding; reasonably priced and the helpings were excellent. I have to say that it is most certainly the best meal I've had at a restaurant in a good many years.

Yum!!! We LOVE Mamma Mias and have eaten there every few weeks since we found the place purely by accident because the restaurant we were going to was shut!! We eat from the 3 courses for £10 menu and take our 2 children (2 and 6) and the staff are wonderful with them. Our kids (one of whom eats very little usually) always eat loads and love it. The food is fresh and staff are friendly. There are usually 6-8 of us and we have NEVER had a bad meal there - i really recommend this restaurant and from our experience they deserve the trade. We will definitely be going back again.

Hello to everyone.

Just to let you all know that the photo of the establishment as well as the actual prices once quoted by Matt and Cat no longer apply, it would therefore be much appreciated if they could revise or update them, since apart from their own opinion which they are entitled to, all the other details regarding the establishment are incorrect, be it the pricing, the "shabby outside look" of the establishment from when it first opened etc.

Therefore it would be appreciated if the above information be revised as to avoid misinforming the general public.

Thank you.

Matt and Cat respond: Thanks for your comments, Mamma Mias. Feel free to use this website to clarify any points about our review that you feel are no longer relevant. We may visit again and, if we do, we'll amend our review of September 2008 if appropriate. Kind regards, Matt and Cat.

we visit the isle of wight around twice a year and usually stay in Sandown, however this year we decided to stay at shanklin.
we tend to eat out on a daily basis whilst on vacation and mamma mia's was one of our favourites. we visited a total of 3 times during a 5 day break as my teenage daughter seemed to have a crush on the young waiter! Each and every time service and food was brilliant.
We always felt welcomed and would be visiting again on our next visit.
Thank you guys!
