Archive review: Mamma Mia, Shanklin
This is an archive review. Mamma Mia has now closed this restaurant and opened another. This review and the comments on it refer to the former venue.
Some considerable time ago, Cat was a regular patron of Pavarotti's Restaurant in Shanklin. Its Italian staff were very welcoming, the authentic Mediterranean food was excellent and flavoursome and the venue was in the style of La Scala - raffia-wrapped wine bottles and piped opera.

The proprietor of Pavarotti's opened a second eatery in Shanklin, the disappointingly short-lived Carrera's (now Chubby's Chunky Chip Shop) on Regent Street; a good spot for a lunchtime gossip over a thin pizza.
Ever-watchful of the goings-on in the Isle of Wight's restaurant world, Matt and Cat noticed the arrival of a new Italian restaurant in Shanklin and, as they had cause to be in that seaside town one night, decided to pay it a visit.
Review continues:

Mamma Mia occupies a prominent position on the corner of Orchardleigh Road and the High Street, perfect for reeling in passing holiday trade. Cryptically, they have been for some time advertising themselves with a rather feeble tangled banner (see picture) which makes identifying the place a little tricky. Undeterred, Matt and Cat were able to take a chance on a coveted window seat and took their places eagerly to the strains of Winner Takes It All - not a reference to Jimmy Tarbuck, but the hit song by Abba. The Swedish Pop Gods were an unexpected musical accompaniment to the whole Mamma Mia experience and, although Matt and Cat are not avid Abba aficionados (or ABBAholics, as fanatics are known), they certainly prefer to tap their toes along to the multitudinous hits of the harmonious Euro-superstars than opera.
The menu had a good, if typical, range of Italian food; pasta, pizzas and salads. There was also a vast fish selection including stuffed trout, red snapper and 'ocean surprise' which was mostly various crustaceans with salad (£41). Cat was feeling hungry and chose ravioli sugo antico - Italian sausage with a garlic and tomato sauce. Matthew also plumped for ravioli, ravioli mari and monte - described as prawns, peppers, olives, mushrooms in garlic olive oil. Cat ordered a glass of red wine to wash down her sausage and was taken aback at the vast (250ml) glass. Perhaps she should have specified a small (125ml) drink. The habit of bars super-sizing drinks is a new and worrying phenomenon according to the government and, when checking this one drink on the NHS alcohol units calculator Cat was shocked to see that it potentially contained over three units of alcohol. Didn't stop her glugging it down though.

The melodious sounds of Abba continued to warble through the speakers, competing with the yelling of one of the many children in the restaurant. Did her mother know? Probably, as Mamma Mia is well-patronised by families and in the commendable Italian tradition they were all given a hearty welcome by the staff. This venue definitely gets a child-friendly tick, although the menu does not seem to explicitly make any concessions to younger visitors, e.g. smaller portions.
The main courses were served very promptly. Cat's bowl was filled with a good pile of ravioli with a concentrated tomato sauce and chunks of spicy sausage. A generous spoonful of Parmesan cheese was proffered by the waiter, topping the dish off nicely. It was all very tasty but the ravioli had a certain familiarity about it. Was it freshly made pasta created in the restaurant's kitchen or - as Matt suspected - something more generic?
Although Cat was pretty pleased with her choice of dish, Matt was more scathing. He didn't like the pasta because of its decidedly un-homemade nature. It was exactly the same pasta and filling that Cat had in her dish. Frankly, it tasted and looked just like the 'fresh pasta' that one can buy half-dried in supermarkets, even down to the tasteless paste of the filling. What's more, ravioli is normally square, or at least flat. These were neither. He was also underwhelmed with his dish's pretty bland mari and monte sauce, counting a mere three prawns. There were some unannounced mussels and some curious rubbery things which tasted decidedly fishy (squid?) but the dish was not as anticipated, or advertised. He mumbled as he mopped up the fishy liquid with some very nice cheesy garlic bread.
Ravioli sugo antico £8.50
Ravioli mari and monte £8.50
Garlic bread £3.90
White wine (glass) £2.50
More Abba tunes drifted through the air; Matt and Cat felt thankful for the music and did some synchronised nodding to 'Voulez-vous'. Cat finished off the glass of wine, Matt downed the rest of his Peroni beer and they looked out of the windows at the meandering pedestrians. M & C discussed what to have for pudding and decided that tiramisu was the only possible choice. Yet more Swedish songs yodelled their way through the ether - but no waiting staff were to be seen. 'I have a dream', said Cat, after some considerable time, '...it's of a marscapone and brandy dessert'. Finally catching the waiter's eye with an S.O.S. of her own, she asked for the tiramisu. Alas, there was none. Matt and Cat decided to leave but, by then, the waiter had cleared off before they could ask for the bill.
Yet more Abba - no waiter. You get the idea. Cat decided to take action and, making her way to the counter was tempted to shout "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme the bill". Money, money, money changed hands and Matt and Cat left to find coffee and pudding at Vernon Cottage, before finally taking their seats at Shanklin Theatre for 'two hours of chuckle therapy' with the legend that is Barry Cryer.
Matt and Cat were underwhelmed by Mamma Mia. The service was erratic, if amiable, and the food, whilst adequate, was neither particularly good nor especially cheap. There are several places across the Island where better Italian food can be had for as much or less - Olivo in Newport is perhaps the most obvious. Actually, it probably doesn't matter what Matt and Cat think - location is the name of the game and its extensive menu and friendly (if distracted) staff will probably be enough for Mamma Mia to succeed in this Summer Night City.

maybe you should stick to your mcdonalds or pizza hut and see how much a average dish will cost you there
Matt and Cat respond: thanks for the lesson in criticism, Stacey. We'll bear your advice in mind.
Apparently this is the same guy mario that used to own Pavarotti's in the old village.
Me and my wife tried both italians in shanklin and would say that Pavarotti's has much more to offer in the way of menu selection, staff competence and quality of food.
Only my opinion
i must disagree with you there we eat here on a regular basis and is probly the best italian meal we have on the island.
fresh pizzas and a massive menu too chose from.
most places have frozen pizzas and over cooked pastas at least here its fresh.
i must say it was spot on!
Still, i recommend you give it another try, everytime i visit the establishment it pleases me on a different level.
when matt and cat visited we had only been open under 5 weeks and were still in the process of getting everything good and running including finding good atentive staff!
the sighn on the window must have got hit by wind before we had a chance to spot it and turn it around!
The cheese on the seafood pasta must have been requested by matt? because my waiters do serve parmesan at the table and not in the kitchen..
since open we have changed a lot of things including the menu now having over 100 dishes on the menu plus daily changing specials, and also a fixed team of good atentive staff.
thank you for your comments and would like to say pop in and give it another try as a lot of things have changed since we first opened a few months ago.
thankx
My wife, brother-in-law, mother in law and I all ordred dover sole and veg....the veg came and to say it was old would be an understatement...prob 3 days, maybe more.....we returned them and ordred salad.....they forgot one, so requested that.....my mum in law noticed that her 'dover sole' was NOT dover sole nor was my brother in laws....in fact they were LEMON SOLE...the waitress or was it the owner was adamant it was dover sole (yet they were totally different to mine and my wifes and we know what dover sole look and taste like!!!), but the attitude of the staff was a joke and they talked to her like an idiot.....until i pointed out she owns 2 restaurant bars in london and has been in the restaurant trade over 40 years....and has certainly eaten more fish than the owner of this rubbish restaurant!!
i will be reporting them to the IOW dept who dished out the joke 5 star award....this is THE worst italian restuarant ive ever been to
it was packed in there...dont know why - the music blaring should have been a hint
in isle of wight - shanklin - we went to morgans which was ok, service was rubbish though (had to move our own tables!!) but no atmoshphere and too clinical for my liking and pavrotti's (which was good and relaxing)
RANT OVER!
Still, I know it`s tough being let down, but someone in your position should really speak up whilst having your meal rather than ranting about it on a website making untrue speculations and insulting remarks regarding staff, food or service.
I tell you this because the vegetables are made fresh on a daily basis due to their high demand specially since the owners of this restaurant turn over roughly 150 people a day during peak season. Yet, you come in unannounced, get kindly seated; don´t leave the table when you are supposed to, making others who have booked that table wait, and then because of one mishap slate it all of as rubbish when everyone else`s plates were clean. (except for the bones of your `non dover sole`).
To sum it up, there are plenty of `Italian`restaurants on the island, pick any one you may prefer, except this one. I´m sure you will enjoy their pizzas a lot more.
Good night, god bless.
we visited mamma mia`s two nights ago on our stay on the isle of wight, as we walked past my children had spotted the pizzas on a table by the window and begged us to go in!
all in all we really enjoyed our meal and the kids said they had eaten what they described as the biggest and bestest pizza ever!
the service was very good and the staff extremely friendly, although the place was fully booked and extremely busy the waiter on the door kindly prepared us a table which happend to be available for just under one and a half hours.
i have viewed the other comments left by others but must say we didnt have any faults to comment on, everyone had a good meal and a good time. we were amazed at the cue on the door to try and get in to this place!
all in all very good and we will be back!! next time we are on the island THANKS GUYS!!
regards rachel x
my husband and i eat at mamma mias about 3 times a week during march when they had a special set menu , 3courses for ONLY 10 POUNDS ! it was fantastic never had a problem everyday they had a choice of different pudings. for 10 pounds you can hardly find a maincourse at that price let alone 3 courses!! 10/10
I lived in Italy for some while and I have to say that the pizzas here rival anything I have eaten over there.
Only one slight disappointment for me. I ordered risotto and was very surprised to find that it was made with Basmati rice. I queried it at the time and apparently the chef "prefers to do it that way". Well, it was tasty, but for me it is the short grain rice (Arborio or similar) that makes it a real risotto. Won't be ordering that again, but I will definitely be going back soon.
The one complaint was about the Lobster thermiador being overdressed
I would give mama mia 2/10, it was extortionate and after reading the above comments it seems i must be in an elitist club to receive discounts, promotions or decent service.
every customer is presented with a 3 course meal offer that commenced on 25th october if you then choose to order perhaps off the main menu then the prices are stated so no confusion could be had..
frankly to be honest i feel this is a false accusation simply to be hurtfull rather then a genuine feed back comment from a customer.
Just to let you all know that the photo of the establishment as well as the actual prices once quoted by Matt and Cat no longer apply, it would therefore be much appreciated if they could revise or update them, since apart from their own opinion which they are entitled to, all the other details regarding the establishment are incorrect, be it the pricing, the "shabby outside look" of the establishment from when it first opened etc.
Therefore it would be appreciated if the above information be revised as to avoid misinforming the general public.
Thank you.
Matt and Cat respond: Thanks for your comments, Mamma Mias. Feel free to use this website to clarify any points about our review that you feel are no longer relevant. We may visit again and, if we do, we'll amend our review of September 2008 if appropriate. Kind regards, Matt and Cat.
we tend to eat out on a daily basis whilst on vacation and mamma mia's was one of our favourites. we visited a total of 3 times during a 5 day break as my teenage daughter seemed to have a crush on the young waiter! Each and every time service and food was brilliant.
We always felt welcomed and would be visiting again on our next visit.
Thank you guys!
Reading Matt and Cat's review, though, I have to say I wondered at first if we really had the same restaurant in mind! I really think it a shame that this apparently very out-dated review continues to top the list of hits returned by Google when one is searching online for the place.
While no expert foodie, I have lived in Italy for a time, and found the pizzas on offer at Mamma Mia among the few I have found in England which manage to emulate the quality of the real deal. As for the ravioli mari e monte that Matt found so disappointing, I found the sauce to be absolutely delicious! Everyone in our party (little ones included) found the food to be of excellent quality, the portions generous, and the service extremely friendly.
For those who might be reading this who have yet to visit Mamma Mia, I urge you to ignore both the picture above and the original review and to go and try it for yourselves. Matt and Cat, i think you should get yourselves back there for a couple of massive, authentic pizzas and some delicious tiramisu - i am sure it won't fail to sweeten your opinion!
Just to let you know that we know have a page on Facebook with the details of the latest menus and special offers available. Check out MammaMia Shanklin and be the first ones to be in the know and look out for some very special promotions only available through Facebook!
Regards.
WE THINK THAT YOUR SERVICES AS CRITICS ARE VERY WELCOME OVERALL, BUT IF YOU SLATE A NEWLY OPENED RESTAURANT (WHO BY ITS OWN ADMISSION HAS CHANGED ANY ERRORS) AND MANY SATISFIED CUSTOMERS OFFER NICER OPINIONS WHICH ARE MORE UP TO DATE, PLEASE GIVE THE COURTESY OF RETURNING AND UPDATING YOUR OPINION. IT MUST BE HARD ENOUGH MAKING A LIVING, LET ALONE BEING PUT DOWN FOR SOMETHING YOU ARE NOT!! MAMMA MIA'S IS A LOVELY, WELCOMING AND FRIENDLY PLACE TO EAT. NOT POSH NOSH, BUT DELIGHTFUL FOOD AND AUTHENTICALY ITALIAN. WE LOVE THE RESTAURANT AND RECOMMEND ALL TO TRY IT, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. THE PRICES ARE SPOT ON AND CURRENTLY HAVE A BRILLIANT 3 COURSE WINTER OFFER FOR £12.99.
COME ON MATT AND CAT, WE LOOK TO YOU FOR UP TO DATE REVIEWS. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, JUST KEEP IT CURRENT
Matt and Cat: {rub ears}
WE WERE WONDERING WHAT 'RUB EARS' MEANS IN RESPONSE TO OUR COMMENTS ON MAMMA MIA'S? PLEASE ELABORATE AS WE ARE NOW MAKING BETS ON WHAT SUCH A STRANGE REPLY COULD BE.
ON ANOTHER NOTE, WE MADE AN ERROR IN OUR EARLIER COMMENTS, THE WINTER SPECIAL THIS YEAR IS £12.00 NOT £12.99, SUCH GOOD VALUE.
WE ATE THERE AGAIN THIS WEEK, AND STILL RECOMMEND ALL TO TRY THIS FOR YOURSELVES. WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT TASTES AND REQUIREMENTS, INCLUDING FOORD CRITICS
Matt & Cat reply: This link takes you to an article concerning those who write in capitals. Thanks for your continuing input, Trevor and Donna. We look forward to reading more from you in the future in whatever case you prefer - and maybe about some other restaurants, too.
Please use lower case in normal dialogue.
We will soon be opening our new restaurant "Mammamia 2" in the sandown area.
With a large capacity seating for over 90 people due to the ever increasing demand for tables!!
Further details to follow, visit our website medasrestaurants.com for further details.
Opening date will shortly follow and for all our existing customers you will be invited to our opening party!
Thankyou
A group of 12 of us went last weekend we Pre-Booked a table and had a very enjoyable evening.
The food was plentiful and extreamly tasty! Between the 12 of us we managed to try alot of the different things on the menu and must say that nothing was below absolute satifaction.
The service was great the staff friendly and could not do enough to help.
The price was very reasonable, we all had three courses and most of us were drinking also and our meal came to just £18 a head, i think extreamly good value for money. Also not one of us would of Objected to paying more as everything was Delicious and the portions were plentiful.
Over all I would recomend this resurant to any one who enjoys fresh, Tasty Italian food.
We all loved it and will definatly be going there again!
We hope to see you there be it for breakfast, lunch, coffees or dinner we do it all at Mamma Mia's 2 Pasta Factory.
You can check all our menus online so don't forget to visit our website for details!!!
See you there!!!
To the owner - the place looks shabby, the sign age hasn't changed from the previous business. ( lazy) the interior is poorly painted - might look ok on the costa del sol, but it winds me up that a business cant even be bothered to make their new venture premises look even presentable....old signs in place, covered with tacky vinyl sign, windows steaming up. PLease make the effort - people expect more .. mamma mia2 ? please ..... get the first one up to scratch first ... !
I notice its always busy, is that because the foods good or is it that it the only other family dining in shanklin bar the crab ?
You come across as nothing short than a sad, lonely individual with nothing better to do than rumble on about coplete nonsense.
Well you obviously know us well enough to realise we have indeed opened up a new business in Sandown, perhaps you would like to give us a quote for the renovation of the place... I was just wondering if by any chance you are the bearded man that walks past everyday and talks to his polystirine coffee cup?
I have been accused of a great many things, ignoring my coffee shall never, NEVER be one of them.
Yours,
Me
Trevor and Donna
Matt & Cat respond: No, we haven't yet although we certainly have it on our list. Some people seem to like it so by all means give it a go - it was a long time ago we went so it might well have changed.
Matt and Cat respond: thank you, we've deleted the comment. Really, we encourage restaurants to participate but we don't think it's good form for them to swear at their customers, even in Italian.
Yes our restaurant is a busy one and many nights are filled with delighted giggling customers but perhaps these are the types of people that don't base their lives on government guidelines, but rather a great atmosphere, great food and great service, if this is the case then we say it's a breath of fresh air.
Either way Mamma Mia's will be closing very soon and moving on to a different local. We therefore thank all our existing customers. Details of this will be available soon on our website.
sobbing "please don't close Mamma Mia's". Please open again in Shanklin very soon!
I would love to win this as my partner and I eat at this resaurant quite regulary, they serve lovely food and at good prices. Service always comes with a smile from the family. True Italiano :D x
Mamma mia does it show again....my my just how much I missed ya
Yes I've been broken hearted, blue since the day we parted
But I hope that I win the competiton so we can be united once again ;o
Matt & Cat run this site for fun, not money, nobody pays to use it and it carrys no advertising.
Get over yourself...some people are going to love your food, some are going to hate
Many of the nicest looking establishments with thousands of pounds worth of fixtures and decorations should have invested more of that on a descent chef and quality food!
I have eaten several times at mammamias and havent found a fault with the food or establishment, maybe it doesnt look like a posh stuck up venue offering small portions at high prices and thats why people love it. Its cosy, friendly and descent which is more then i can say for a lot of the other places near by.
You seldom learn from good criticism...but should always learn from bad, and abusing people that have an opinion is not going to win you customers.
We're now turned the comments back on. We are delighted to hear about the Mamma Mia competition and wish all the commenters the best of luck in winning a meal for two for a whole year! (Competition open until 1 October). What a great idea, and thanks Mamma Mia for supporting our website.
So please leave your thoughts again, but do be polite in your comments, and don't spoil the competition for everyone else.
And to top it off - a chance to eat there for a WHOLE year - errrr yes please!!
The food was amazing and your are not rushed, but left to enjoy the meal in peace and very reasonably priced too.
A lovely Restaurant,No expensive prices or over the top Advertising.
Just Great Food and very welcoming Hospitality
So, on that basis I feel you should pick me, I could feast on a funghi (pizza), gnaw on the gnocchi, ravish the ravioli or terrify a tiramisu.
A weekly Italian feast would surely supplement my 'gruel only' diet, no more would I have to plead, "Please Sir, can I have some more?....". Never again would I feel faint whilst climbing and cleaning chimneys, never again would I stare longingly at unfortunate rabbits lying squashed by the side of the road thinking how appetising they look....
You could really make a difference, so when making your choice please think of that 19th century orphan boy living in your midst and squashing his face against your window admiring the dishes you serve.........
Do I win??
since day one ive been by your side.
tell all my mates that your the best,
in 20 years ive tried the rest.
without fail you fit us in,
even when weve not booked in.
like to say thankyou for serving us well,
and in your new venture we hope you do well.
52 meals would be good for me!
but im a paying customer as you can see!
either way well be back again and again
to the mamma mia gang.... my friends!
Matt & Cat respond: please do Graeme. We'd love to hear what you think. And don't forget to tell them we sent you, eh? ;)
I dont know if there have been falling outs between you guys or something but to be honest alot of people need to grow up and focusing on your own business and cut the sarcasm but thats just my opinion!
