Baywatch on the Beach, St Helens

Baywatch on the Beach

The Baywatch on the Beach Cafe has a reputation for good food in a stunning location. It also offers food both at lunchtime and in the evening, and so Matt and Cat have visited at both these times, on separate occasions. You can read the two resulting reviews here.

OCTOBER 2007: EVENING MENU
Following Matt and Cat's first visit at lunchtime, the Baywatch review has been one of the most popular on the whole site, and attracted many comments both favourable and otherwise. Matt and Cat decided to make a second visit, this time to sample the evening menu.

Review continues:

Plenty has been said about the Baywatch on the Beach's location. In the evening it is just as lovely; lights from distant boats twinkle across the sea and, when Matt and Cat visited, they also watched the helicopter India Juliet sweeping across the harbour entrance.

Cat had sensibly booked a table at the restaurant and, on arrival, your reviewers were greeted by the polite proprietor who seated them by the vast picture window. M and C took a moment to relax and gaze at St Helens sea fort in the last of the rapidly fading evening light.

Menus soon arrived, along with drinks and more courteous repartee from the proprietor. The menu selection at the Baywatch on the Beach is short but impressive. There will be something for all tastes, particularly for those who enjoy seafood. Crustaceans, shellfish and fish dishes make up the majority of the bill of fare and can be ordered as starters, soup, salad and main courses with a variety of treatments.

There is also beef, available as 8oz fillet steak and the 'Baywatch special gourmet burger' which was well rated by Mad Mart, chicken and a couple of vegetarian options, including butternut squash, goats cheese and pine nut risotto. As well as this regular menu, there is a tempting specials menu.

It didn't take Cat long to choose - her normal favourite chicken has been demoted to the number two spot by a new love: fillet steak. She can't get enough of it! Matthew's instinct was to have the burger but, breaking with tradition, he opted for the special menu's tuna steak on a bed of French beans and mixed olives. Both chose chips and Mediterranean vegetables.

Whilst waiting for the food to arrive, Matt and Cat watched the daylight fade across the English Channel until their view of the sea was exchanged for that of their expectant faces, reflected in the window.

Tuna steak
Tuna steak

Matt's steak was a whopper! It was served on a perky-green bed of French beans, cooked al dente - delightfully crisp. Cat's medium-cooked fillet steak looked nice and juicy; browned on the outside and pinkish in the middle. It looked a bit lonely on the plate with just a ramekin of tomato and onion chutney to keep it company.

Fillet steak
Fillet steak

In a moment the chips and what seemed to be only one portion of veg arrived. Cat made enquiries: was the bowl of vegetables for both of them? It was. An extra bowl was offered but, concerned about possibly incurring additional expense on an already high-end meal, they declined. The pretty uninspiring skinny fries supplied were not quite as impressive as Matt and Cat had been expecting. Perhaps some chunky steak-cut chips or even fresh-cut potato wedges might have upped the ante. None-the-less, it all got eaten.

The steak was very tasty but not as soft as some Cat had eaten. She decided that this was not the fault of the Baywatch or its steak; she should have ordered it rare, as she usually does. Matt's tuna really was a well-crafted meal, featuring a splendid combination of tastes and textures. Balsamic reduction and the finest slivers of red onion gave the gently-flavoured tuna and beans a real zing.

As mentioned above, the Baywatch on the Beach is not the cheapest place to eat. For a single course and drinks Matt and Cat paid out some £40; which is well towards the top of the scale, even for meals of that standard.

Despite the comments below Matt and Cat found no evidence of surly gossiping teenagers weeping in the kitchen. Apart from the early attention of the proprietor, the service did tend towards the indifferent and, at nearly £20 for one dish, Matt and Cat would perhaps have hoped for a bit more interaction. After all, it's not just food that you pay for in a restaurant; even staff in the most humble of cafes will usually offer more drinks, ask if you want any sauces or, part way through the meal will come and check if everything is OK.

So, is the Baywatch on the Beach worth the high level of praise received through this eating out guide and elsewhere? The location is unparalleled, and Matt and Cat can confidently report that if you're willing to pay a good price, you're going to get some very good food at the Baywatch, without a doubt.

JUNE 2006: LUNCHTIME MENU
The Baywatch on the Beach Cafe has a reputation for good food in a stunning location. A gentle stroll along the pretty causeway to the protected sand dunes led your reviewers to the perfectly positioned cafe. Families frolicked in the sea on June's first sunny weekend and Matt and Cat's thoughts turned to ice cream.

However, the walkers soon had their heads turned away from ice cream and towards the Baywatch on the Beach lunchtime menu. As well as serving the traditional ice cream and snacks for those on the beach, this cafe-cum-restaurant has seemingly pulled off the remarkable feat that so many places try to emulate - it showed full menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and it seems that the place does good trade for all three sessions. This is not surprising, given the spectacular location. Matt and Cat went at lunchtime, so this review can only give a perspective on the lunchtime offerings.

There was plenty on offer in the way of main meals and sandwiches and baguettes including chicken, ham and crab. Prices were definitely more than the normal beach cafe - but then this place is so much more than an ordinary beach cafe. Matt and Cat decided on chicken strips, chips and salad - Matt went for the regular dish while Cat was allowed to have the child's portion. Within a moment their drinks arrived; a steaming mug of tea for Matt and a long glass of cool refreshing apple juice for Cat. With hardly any noticeable delay, the food followed.

Food at the Baywatch on the Beach Cafe, St Helens

The meals were nicely presented with sprinklings of parsley on the plates. The salad was fresh with three different sorts of pepper, some crinkly lettuce, plenty of cucumber and the ubiquitous raw onion slices. The dressing was very pleasant, although Cat's attempts to deconstruct the flavour failed; it might have been Caesar sauce. The chicken strips were probably not home-created but they were nice and hot and the chicken wasn't rubbery or gristly.

Cat's eyes were, alas, bigger than her stomach. She should have gone with her first choice of chicken and mayonnaise sandwich which may have left enough room for her to have one of the delicious looking home-made cakes (the tiffin looked superb). However, the cakes will have to be sampled on a subsequent visit - of which there will undoubtedly be many.

Have been coming down to the island for 15+ years and have only just discovered Baywatch Cafe on the Beach, thanks to Conde Nast Traveller Magazine. Things started badly, they had booked us in the next day, but they sorted it out and immediately insisted that the bottle of wine ordered, was on the house. A generous gesture that recognises that in the hospitality industry its all about service. Good quality ingrediants, well, if unspectacularly cooked, if anything the portions were too big, they could cut down portions by a third and charge 10% less.

Went to the restaurant on a midsummers evening this year (2006). faultless; the kids choices were healthy, our options (Thai Mussels and Scallops with Pumpkin seed salsa) cooked with flair and delicacy and the service immaculate. A real treat.

My partner and I have been to B on the B several times for evening meals, and are consistently entertained not only by the excellent food, but by the slightly laid-back owner, who just seems too gentlemanly to be running a hard nosed business, yet seems to be making a success of it.

Highly recommended from us!

Matt & Cat, keep up the excellent work!

I had the misfortune to eat in this establishment whilst on holiday, the location is great, beautiful views, this is the only good thing. The staff are mainly teenagers who are more interested in chatting to each other than doing their job, if you are looking for good food, go somehwere else, finally the place is full of screaming kids and even more noisy bad mannered parents, would not go back if the food was free.

We had the most fabulous dining experience at this restaurant. As the huge full moon shimmered on the sea I had lobster, my wife seabass, whilst our children tucked into child portions of fillet steak and moules marinier. The service and food were simply perfect - as was the location. We even spoiled ourselves with a scrumptios dessert followed by coffee and liquers outside at a table by the sea. Cannot wait to return just as soon as it opens for the next season.

have been for a meal at baywatch on the beach over this easter weekend the food was to die for and the relaxed and welcoming staff made the evening so pleasurable. We decided to go back on the sunday night and enjoyed the evening once again. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff.i had whole grilled seabass and my wife had the very generous fillet steak with wild mushroom sauce, i must also reccomend the crab thermidore pancakes with a parmesan cheese glaze. We are islanders walking by and smelt the aroma of garlic butter filling the cool evening air and could not resist going in. Will be going back very soon. What ever they pay the chef is not enough.

Came down to the island for the easter break with the family and were told to visit the baywatch from friends who live near by, they claimed it was out of this world!. i couldn't agree more with them! the front of house staff were extremely polite! a large variety of meals available, was a tad over priced but we were more than happy to pay because the service was impeccable and the food was delicious, i had the crab salad my mother had the fillet steak and my friend had a gourmet burger, all meals were very well presented and tasted great! will defiantly visit again!

We made our second visit to BOTB yesterday, in a rare child free lunchtime. We had the gourmet burgers, which were excellent. Service was good too. The only slight let down was the salad. Unlike M&C I rather like raw onion, especially red onion, to feature in my salad, but the red onion served was rather too potent! The rest of the salad was OK, and certainly fresh, but had that slightly bland flavour of supermarket produce. I have perhaps been spoiled recently by eating home grown onions, and some fantastically sweet and tasty peppers and tomatoes from Wight Salads at the County Show. This does highlight to me just how important getting the right ingredients is in making the prefect meal. Still, the meal was very enjoyable overall, and the burgers come highly recommended, and the views just top off the experience.

My parents had the misfortune to accidently upset the owners daughter by asking a simple question about why they weren't able to reserve a table in the window, yet when they arrived for their meal, a window table had 'reserved' on it! When my parents wanted some clarification about this she wasn't able to answer! They weren't rude or aggressive but the next thing they knew, her father came out and asked them to leave as they had upset her and she was 'sobbing' in the kitchen! Very childish, no way to run a business and as local residents with many connections will never go there again and will no doubt talk about their experience to anyone who cares to listen. They went on to dinner at the excellent St Helen's restarant and have raved about it ever since. Very immature way to behave and i pity the other employees, who no doubt have to tread on eggshells around the daughter in case they accidently upset her and she goes running to 'Daddy'! Unbelievable!

Read the comments on this site & decided that LS Mullet must have visited on a bad day. Obviously not the only bad day! Visited on a Saturday evening. The location is great, with beautiful views. The staff are all sullen teenage girls except the owner who spent his time guarding the till. If you are looking for good food then go somewhere else. Very expensive burger & chips obviously cooked together in a deep fryer, burger was SOLID. (Non fish menu is VERY limited, 3 choices?). Two different fish dishes were awarded 5/10 by our wives. Very noisy but then it is only a prefab. Overwhelming impression of indifference to customers. Plenty of nicer, cheaper quality places on the island, some with equal views.

I visit this restaurant regularly with my family, my holiday home being just up the hill. I walk my dog daily past the Baywatch and call in for a glorious glass of their house red or an espresso almost every day.

Do book for dimmer - the food and service are truly exceptional, especially the lobster (you will not get it fresher). My boys love the gourmet burgers, but insist on ketchup...

The New England meets Florida Keys atmosphere is just right and the staff freindly and efficient. Congratulations to the whole family team on doing such a great job!

I live in the village and eat at BontB a couple times a year. I do enjoy it but a couple of things would really improve the place:1. The portions are WAY too big - cut down by a third at least. 2.The student staff (especially in the summer) are a bit too gossipy and very concerned with the customers. They also do that very annoying "I'm not going to make eye contact with you so you can ask me for anything" thing too. 3. Hate paying £20 for lobster salad and then getting the condiments in squeezy plastic sachets. This is ok for takeaway but not here. This and the ugly beer label parasols outside slightly lower the tone of what could be a real gem.

We've been to BOTB a few times.

I think if it wasn't for the fantastic location, it wouldn't be nearly so popular. The food is ok - not stunning - and very, very overpriced.

We've had a couple of 'altercations' with the manager who, with the greatest of respect, isn't the most organised person in the world.

About thirty years ago it was the most fantastic beach cafe.....

Its just like a restaurant in florida ive been too, its all about location and superficiality, as often with restaurants, if they are near the sea they can charge whatever they want. Its an OK restaurant but not worth the money. By all accounts, the managemnt and staff seem to be sensitive to any form of the mildest criticism and rather disorganised.

I have not as of yet had a chance to eat at b.o.b. but i would like to express my biggest thanks to the manager.
I took some friends for a night walk on the beach today.
I had the misfortune to lose my car key on the beach and after searching for an hour was still no further in finding it.
We asked in b.o.b if they had a torch we could borrow and althought they did not and they were shutting up and going home for the night the manager could not have been more helpfull. He took us home to shanklin but half way my partner rang and had found the key. So the manger then took us all the way back to st helens. He was a polite and helpfull gentleman who went right out of his way for us and i completely appriciate it and look forward to eating there soon.

Matt and Cat respond: Thanks for your comment, Kerry. We'd be very interested in hearing your opinions of the food at Baywatch on the Beach, if you ever eat there.

My family and I booked to eat at Baywatch and experienced the worst service and meal we have ever had in an Isle of Wight restaurant. We arrived on time for our booking and were promptly seated and served with drinks. One of our party of 6 ordered a starter which, again arrived promptly. We then waited patiently for well over one hour, although others around us who'd arrived later were being served main courses. My granddaughters were starting to feel unwell with hunger. When our meal eventually arrived my son's order of mussels were shrivelled, overcooked and mostly stone cold. My order of steamed cod was so overcooked it was like rubber. My son declined to have a fresh meal prepared. I accepted a re-make of cod, only to find the whole dish bereft of seasoning and flavour. The owner/manager was polite and apologetic and made a small adjustment to the bill. However, the food consumed was well below the expected standard for the prices charged, the front of house service was extremely disorganised - we'd had plenty of time to observe this. Perhaps bread could been served as standard to alleviate diner's hunger pangs whilst waiting, sauces offered when the food arrived and the cheap lilac serviettes replaced with something more substantial. I would rename this restaurant "I saw you coming"

My wife and I called in yesterday for a cup of tea and a slice of caramel tart/cake. It was very pleasant, if rather expensive. What surprised and somewhat repelled me, however, was the state of the self-service cutlery in its tray. A lot of the forks, and several knives, had bits of food stuck on them, and looked more as if they'd been wiped with a tissue and put there, rather than having been washed. As I wanted to enjoy my snack, I decided not to look more closely.

Unfortunately, against my better judgement, my wife persuaded me not to make a fuss, (she's recently had a bereavement and was trying to have a stress-free day), and suggested it was up to other customers to check their own cutlery. Maybe it was just as well we had take-away cups.

I noticed they have a 4-star hygiene rating - I wonder if that covers things like cleanliness of implements?

I first went to the Duver Cafe in 1968,when it was owned by a mr Coombes(Roger)from Upper Green Rd....the clientele in those days were grateful for Sausage ,Egg and Chips, cooked by Roger, whilst his Dad,Clifford attended the Caravans and Toilets......Then it was run by a Mr and Mrs Nutt, whose menu was the ill fated "Banger Dog"...subsequently it was turned into the Baywatch Restaurant, that you all love,by Mr Pat Boynton. We have had many happy Holidyas in the Duver Caravans, and the Cafe/restuarant has been a great assett...lovely Breakfasts, plenty of snacks for the Youngsters.Ice Creams,Sweets,Home Made Cakes....lovely.If i ever manage to get another Holiday on the Island,i will be down the Duver to the Restaurant at the earliest oportunity....long may it flourish...whoever owns and runs it......

The Baywatch at St Helens Duver is very overpriced for what they sell
I have seen so many people park their motors and when they have seen the menu
they drive away.
The view and location is fantastic shame about the prices.

My family and I went there a couple of years ago for breakfast but the girl serving could not make a decent cup of tea (I couldn't tell if it was Nats or Cats)

Just been to BWOTB, had two burgers - not bad but the chips could have been better not cheap and frozen at these prices, my son had the spag bol and although he ate it i tasted it at the end and it was tasteless - I thought it only right I inform the staff to let them know my opinion, although (and I assume this) after telling the owner what I thought he went away tasted the spag bol and came back and told me there was nothing wrong with it and it wasnt tasteless, I then told him I thought it was a shame not to take on board customer comments and he just shrugged his shoulders and walked away!! Needless to say I would rather spend my hard earned cash somewhere else, I won't be fleeced again .....and yes the guy standing next to me pulled out at least ten knives out of the cutlery tray before finding a clean one (I am not joking you)

Mike glad to see your comments, like me who also visited BOTB still when I read your comments today I am still incensed at the response I received from the owner. Again it has been 3 weeks since I went !! I know better than most that when working in a kitchen/restaurant you can get things wrong and you do have bad days, but the issue I have is it is not necessarily the problem you have experienced but the way it is dealt with. If you are shown some consideration as a customer and made to feel your comments are taken on board then I think you would definetley try again. I feel however due to BOTB location and the fact they mainly serve tourists I suspect they don't care about us Islanders.

I often pop into the BWOTB for a coffee after walking my dogs. The only reason being it has no immediate competition in the area. Prices are VERY HIGH and the young staff are absolutely charmless. A smile costs nothing. The owner has never once offered so much as a good morning. What a contrast to the Del cafe at Appley point where the prices are reasonable, staff charming and the home made food delicious and innovative.

4 of us visited a month ago, so comments not written in the heat of the moment. Sadly I agree with negatives above. Last year standard was dropping, this year pretty dreadful. Staff chatting in bar area (drinking soft drinks) while tables tried to attract attention, drinks orders wrong, then no-one brings the things they forgot, a long wait for food, 2 plates of mussels very lukewarm, had obviously been sitting waiting for the other 2 main courses which were very hot. The thai moules sauce (had before and it was OK) was bland, very ordinary, and tasted of badly blended ingredients, the marinieres version similarly tasteless. Mussels sent back for hot version but nothing reappeared, after 15/20 mins the 2 with food had finished, we called it a day (paying for what we had), 2 having eaten nothing, been there an hour and a quarter. No manager on site. We called later to speak to the owner - not irate, but interested in the reaction. A small gesture (free glass of wine if you give us another chance type thing) would have done the trick. Spoke to a duty manager, claimed to know nothing of what had happened, then suddenly he was arguing and apparently did know about it. Asked if he had any observation to make - "no" - then disconnected. Hmmm....complacent, over-rated now, a shame.

Visited this cafe in August. Food was excellent and cannot be faulted. Felt sorry for kitchen staff as their fine efforts are let down by the arguementative, sloppy and disinterested waiting staff. Forgot to put order into kitchen, forgot half of meal when did arive (after an hour), forgot half the drinks, silly excuses and no apolgies. No manager on site and no one willing to take any responsability.

We ate here for an evening mealin July this year and again when we had 'full tide' breakfasts on a Sunday morning in August.
Both times we had long waits for food and spent the time at the table watching the uninterested girls taking orders. The location is lovely but the food is not exceptional for the prices and the service is SLOW. We have an apartment in St Helens and would always visit here once, but probably not twice, on our holidays. Everyone from the owner guy to the waiting staff seems very uninterested in the customers and smiles are very rare!.The menu has been the same for many years. Such a shame because it could be fantastic.

Oh dear! What a disappointment. We waited an hour for our food, we were not approached at all after our initial drinks order. The food was expensive and very plain-(£13.95 for an advocado and prawn salad). I had two thin slices of advocado, the prawns were tasteless and there was no dressing of any description on any of it!! Tasteless and all salad and minimum premium ingredients. Boring, dull and overpriced. Unusually for me I felt so let down ---I complained to the owner.

He was not bothered in the least and as commented on earlier made no gesture to remedy the situation.I think he assumed that we were on holiday. WRONG,we are locals and will spread the word. Matt and Katt, where is your latest review??????????It is needed in time for the summer season???!!!

We stopped off here after a gorgeous dog walk around Priory bay. We didn't eat, but sat outside and both had coffee. As I sat waiting for my drink, I pondered why the national press seem to like this one. As for location? Well, I've sat and overlooked far, far nicer beaches. The cafe itself is just that, a cafe. Then I thought about the attraction of the practicalities. You can park (and pay!) right there and you can watch your kiddies play on the beach as you take up one of the outside tables. So it's like a one stop kind of place.

The prices did look expensive, but there are plenty of options like cake or ice creams. Just a shame there were loads of midges down there yesterday!

By the way, the coffee was lovely!
