White Horse, Whitwell
Whitwell is a little off Matt and Cat's usual beaten track but, in the interests of egalitarianism, they are happy to venture into the Island's rural depths. And, fresh from attending a recording session of Gardeners' Question Time at Ventnor Winter Gardens, they took a hop, skip and a jump westwards to the White Horse at Whitwell.

For a Monday night, the place was heaving - in fact there was only one free table. Matt and Cat wondered whether this was because of the pub's excellent facilities or, possibly, because it is the only venue for miles around. They were soon to find out.
Having recovered from 2006's thatch fire, the pub is most definitely open for business. Being first time visitors, Matt and Cat were not sure if the huge room to the left of the main bar was a recent extension - perhaps built as part of the recovery works. It certainly did not have the same cosy character as the rest of the pub. Despite its resemblance to a school hall, this side of the pub was as packed as the rest - mostly with families. Matt and Cat declined this canteen-like area and took the opportunity to sit next to the stone fireplace in the old pub when a seat became vacant.
Review continues:

The hungry pair had arrived with at least half an hour to spare before the kitchen shut, as last food orders is a pleasingly tardy 21:30. This was a good thing, as it took a good five minutes to read the astonishingly copious menu, and the tempting meals on the specials board. The only thing that wasn't so tempting was the prices. This is not the Hogs Head, where you can get two meals for £6.95; the White Horse's prices are more in-line with the Smart Fox's gastropub bill of fare.
Matt was not put off by the prices, opting for the steak fajitas special at a purse-pounding £12.95. Cat played safe with chicken supreme with tarragon which was a (slightly) more reasonable £10.95.
Whilst waiting for their meals to arrive Matthew had the misfortune to find himself supping on a bad pint. Enquiries at the bar led to consternation amongst the staff, who were so appalled by this lapse that they fell to arguing amongst themselves. Not quite the professional image, but certainly showing a commendable commitment to good quality beer. Matt's pint, which had been mistakenly served from the tail-end of a barrel, was readily replaced by a faultless fresh pint. Shortly after, your reviewers' heads were turned by sizzling meat, spitting and hissing on its piping hot skillet; that'll be Matt's steak fajitas.
Rump steak, chips and peas: £11.95
Fillet steak medallions: £16.95
Total: £28.90
A truly outstanding mountain of fried onions, extremely tender slices of steak and peppers. The meat had been cooked in the sauce, giving it a splendid flavour of garlic and chilli. All this was accompanied by a plate bulging with tortilla wraps, home-made dips (guacamole, salsa and sour cream), grated cheese and salad. A right feast! Matt was overjoyed at the quantity and quality of his meal. Cat, not normally a big fan of red meat, scrounged a sliver of steak and was left to wonder why all steak couldn't be so soft and tasty.

Cat's chicken supreme was equally large; the plate swimming in the most sublime creamy tarragon sauce and, in the middle, a lovely piece of chicken with a few thick slices of mushroom to add further texture. This dish came with a potato option, veg or salad. Cat chose chips and salad. The chips were nice and chunky and served in a rather retro plastic basket. Both Matthew's and Cat's salads were pretty typical: iceberg lettuce, fresh tomato, home-made coleslaw and cucumber with the surprise additions of green pepper, celery and, er, grit. Neither salad was satisfactorily grit-free; perhaps this was just a temporary problem with the salad washer? However, the waitress kindly brought out a jug of French dressing to help it go down.
So, the mystery of why the White Horse was so busy on a Monday evening was solved. It may be the only pub for miles around - and it was pub quiz night - but it must be such a popular venue because of the efforts in the kitchen - the food was superb.

UPDATE: Summer 2009
The White Horse has changed hands, and even closed for a short while in spring 2009. So when it reopened Matt and Cat paid another visit, intending to re-review the new establishment. However they are able to report with pleasure that more-or-less nothing has changed since this 2007 review was written, and in fact if anything matters have improved. No problems with the beer, no grit in the salads. Even under the new management the food is still outstanding, the menu impressive and the beer decent. Atmosphere, great service and plenty of space make this a top pick for a family meal out. So no new review is required: it's still highly recommended.

(We had steaks). Both meals were excellent in every respect. A pleasant and convivial atmosphere prevailed, in no small way due to the charming and vivacious barmaid - whatever they are paying her, its not enough!
Top marks!
I wonder if you could describe the barmaid, as I would be interested to know which of my colleagues you are being so complimentary about. It would be lovely to give her such great feedback.
Thanks
From memory, fairly short, longish dark wavy hair, enjoys local sunbathing haunts.

The choice of food in this place is staggering. The specials board alone gives as much variety as some pubs entire menus! I had chicken in garlic butter sauce, which was very tasty, and my wife had the chicken stroganoff; which she declared to be the best she had ever tasted.
Looking forward to our next visit to the Island so that we can come to this pub again.
Many Thanks Jerrie
just unlucky. But it's still hard to find a pub on the Island that can beat the
White Horse, so I've no doubt we'll be returning (although I'll give the duck
a miss next time...)
Curious mistake for a pub/restaurant to make.
Curious that a poster of your obvious high standards doesn't think there are any cod in the vicinity of IoW waters......!!
The link I have posted must lead to the most spectaculary unsuccessful Cod fishing tournament ever held!
You've missed out!
This was a restaurant quality meal, a cut above your average pub grub but at a fraction of the cost of a 'restaurant'.
Hopefully we just went on a bad day, as reviewers since me have obviously enjoyed their food.
a great fan off jerries mixed grill.
with a lovely atmosphere and excellent service wont be long before i go back!!
The 'Sausage Pie' special will be sorely missed! Best of luck with your next venture, wherever that may be! Good luck to whoever is taking over, they have a lot to live up to....
Cheers
Colin
and we eat out all over the island and I can honestly say no one does a Roast Dinner like The White Horse @ Whitwell.
The Trio was the best + Lovely huge Yorkshire Pudding and lovely Roast Potato's
and the dinners were massive (unlike most pubs)
Jerrie will you be running another pub?
Food was ok, ham off the bone, two tasty fried eggs, my wife's tuna was tasteless and unimaginatively presented, but if you like chips and buckets of them , this is the place for you !Reminded me sowmewhat of the Spyglass without the sea view.
Good menu choice but odd assortment of mismatched furniture
Cant help thinking the new owners need to step outside and walk back in, something is missing from the recipe here, a liitle more appeal and warmth in the dining araes, a few more pictures on the wall, and much fatser serviced or at least an apology for the expected delay when ordering
not only was the chef cooking for us he was also cooking for the public this must of been very hard so many meals all at once well done all of you
All in all a really lovely meal - genuinely nice people and a happy clean pub!
We'll be back very soon !!!!!
The spicy beef stir fry was superb, and my wife's mixed grill was equally good. The only thing is it would have been impossible to eat a starter or pudding as well.
p.s. if you do not want to be cooked your self do not sit in front of the log burning fire.
p.p.s this is the place for my 88 year old father he love to be warm.
One small gripe is that the waiter could have been a bit more friendly.Perhaps he was having a a bad hair day ?
All in all a great value for money meal.
It was as good as he said, large tender slices of duck, and a huge portion at that, in a lovely hoisin sauce, and i have been dreaming of this meal ever since. I read that one lady did not enjoy this meal, but i could not fault it.
To start i had squid in salt and pepper batter with plum sauce, and ashamed to admit a dessert, well
shared, as i was well stuffed by now, this was constructed with dyme bars and was also unforgettable.
There were three of us eating, three starters, two adult mains, one as above and the other meal a large steak with all the trimmings and my thin daughter in law decided on a smaller
child's lasagne, but that was huge too, an alcholic drink each, and a shared dessert, and one coffee
it came to £60, which i found reasonable, especially for the standard of the meal.
The only gripe i had was that as i was with my skint son I paid the bill, oh well nothings perfect.
Am going back next week, can not wait.
