White Horse, Whitwell

Whitwell is a little off Matt and Cat's usual beaten track but, in the interests of egalitarianism, they are happy to venture into the Island's rural depths. And, fresh from attending a recording session of Gardeners' Question Time at Ventnor Winter Gardens, they took a hop, skip and a jump westwards to the White Horse at Whitwell.

White Horse, Whitwell

For a Monday night, the place was heaving - in fact there was only one free table. Matt and Cat wondered whether this was because of the pub's excellent facilities or, possibly, because it is the only venue for miles around. They were soon to find out.

Having recovered from 2006's thatch fire, the pub is most definitely open for business. Being first time visitors, Matt and Cat were not sure if the huge room to the left of the main bar was a recent extension - perhaps built as part of the recovery works. It certainly did not have the same cosy character as the rest of the pub. Despite its resemblance to a school hall, this side of the pub was as packed as the rest - mostly with families. Matt and Cat declined this canteen-like area and took the opportunity to sit next to the stone fireplace in the old pub when a seat became vacant.

Review continues:

Steak fajitas

The hungry pair had arrived with at least half an hour to spare before the kitchen shut, as last food orders is a pleasingly tardy 21:30. This was a good thing, as it took a good five minutes to read the astonishingly copious menu, and the tempting meals on the specials board. The only thing that wasn't so tempting was the prices. This is not the Hogs Head, where you can get two meals for £6.95; the White Horse's prices are more in-line with the Smart Fox's gastropub bill of fare.

Matt was not put off by the prices, opting for the steak fajitas special at a purse-pounding £12.95. Cat played safe with chicken supreme with tarragon which was a (slightly) more reasonable £10.95.

Whilst waiting for their meals to arrive Matthew had the misfortune to find himself supping on a bad pint. Enquiries at the bar led to consternation amongst the staff, who were so appalled by this lapse that they fell to arguing amongst themselves. Not quite the professional image, but certainly showing a commendable commitment to good quality beer. Matt's pint, which had been mistakenly served from the tail-end of a barrel, was readily replaced by a faultless fresh pint. Shortly after, your reviewers' heads were turned by sizzling meat, spitting and hissing on its piping hot skillet; that'll be Matt's steak fajitas.

Even under the new management the food is still outstanding, the menu impressive and the beer decent
Matt and Cat's bill (July 2009 visit)
Rump steak, chips and peas: £11.95
Fillet steak medallions: £16.95
Total: £28.90

A truly outstanding mountain of fried onions, extremely tender slices of steak and peppers. The meat had been cooked in the sauce, giving it a splendid flavour of garlic and chilli. All this was accompanied by a plate bulging with tortilla wraps, home-made dips (guacamole, salsa and sour cream), grated cheese and salad. A right feast! Matt was overjoyed at the quantity and quality of his meal. Cat, not normally a big fan of red meat, scrounged a sliver of steak and was left to wonder why all steak couldn't be so soft and tasty.

Chicken supreme

Cat's chicken supreme was equally large; the plate swimming in the most sublime creamy tarragon sauce and, in the middle, a lovely piece of chicken with a few thick slices of mushroom to add further texture. This dish came with a potato option, veg or salad. Cat chose chips and salad. The chips were nice and chunky and served in a rather retro plastic basket. Both Matthew's and Cat's salads were pretty typical: iceberg lettuce, fresh tomato, home-made coleslaw and cucumber with the surprise additions of green pepper, celery and, er, grit. Neither salad was satisfactorily grit-free; perhaps this was just a temporary problem with the salad washer? However, the waitress kindly brought out a jug of French dressing to help it go down.

So, the mystery of why the White Horse was so busy on a Monday evening was solved. It may be the only pub for miles around - and it was pub quiz night - but it must be such a popular venue because of the efforts in the kitchen - the food was superb.

UPDATE: Summer 2009
The White Horse has changed hands, and even closed for a short while in spring 2009. So when it reopened Matt and Cat paid another visit, intending to re-review the new establishment. However they are able to report with pleasure that more-or-less nothing has changed since this 2007 review was written, and in fact if anything matters have improved. No problems with the beer, no grit in the salads. Even under the new management the food is still outstanding, the menu impressive and the beer decent. Atmosphere, great service and plenty of space make this a top pick for a family meal out. So no new review is required: it's still highly recommended.

Have only eaten at the White Horse once, on a very busy Saturday night, but the food was wonderful, best pub meal I've had for years. Lots of good fish dishes, but lovely (Godshill)duck and lamb dishes as well. It's not c cheap, but you get what you pay for. Highly recommended.

Returned to the White Horse last week. Food still good, but we made the mistake of going on Tuesday (steak night), when almost all the blackboard specials were variations on steak. This is not a complaint, it was just that we didn't realise about "steak night" beforehand, and thought it was worth pointing out. p.s. The portions are still huge, but two of our party managed dessert, (variations on cheesecake and fruit etc),and said these were well up to the pub's high standard.

We also went on a Tuesday night, and it was steak which held-sway on the blackboard.
(We had steaks). Both meals were excellent in every respect. A pleasant and convivial atmosphere prevailed, in no small way due to the charming and vivacious barmaid - whatever they are paying her, its not enough!

If there is a pub on the Island that serves better food I have yet to find it. I have been through a good part of the menu and tried many specials and never had a bad meal.

Top marks!

Dear John and Janet,

I wonder if you could describe the barmaid, as I would be interested to know which of my colleagues you are being so complimentary about. It would be lovely to give her such great feedback.

Thanks

Best food on the Island. We were fortunate to stay in Whitwell over ten years ago and discovered this fantastic pub. Every year we make our annual pilgrimage to The White Horse for a meal and we have never been disappointed (except the year we arrived and found it was shut because of the fire). Fabulous menu with dozens of great dishes, friendly and helpful staff, quick turnaround even at the busiest times, massive portions (we have never managed 3 courses) and great beer. We shall be back next year and look forward to another great evening out.

Went for dinner on Friday night full of expectation after a great first-time visit earlier in the year, and it was every bit as good again as we hoped. The extremely friendly bar staff made up for the fact that there were no local brews on tap that night, so had to settle for a pint of Ringwood; which isn't too much of a hardship really.
The choice of food in this place is staggering. The specials board alone gives as much variety as some pubs entire menus! I had chicken in garlic butter sauce, which was very tasty, and my wife had the chicken stroganoff; which she declared to be the best she had ever tasted.
Looking forward to our next visit to the Island so that we can come to this pub again.

The White Horse is a favourite of ours for Saturday lunches and celebrations. We've never been disappointed with either the choices on the menu or the meals, in fact we find it hard to chose to go any where else. The staff are always helpful and friendly too.

Thanks for your kind comments just to let you all know full menu and info on the pub is available at www.whitehorseinnpub.com

Returned to the White Horse a while ago, but, for the first time, was disappointed with my dish- a duck stir fry, (meat was tough, and felt overcooked, although the spicy sauce was lovely). Mind you, everyone else in the group loved their meals, so perhaps I was
just unlucky. But it's still hard to find a pub on the Island that can beat the
White Horse, so I've no doubt we'll be returning (although I'll give the duck
a miss next time...)
21/01/09 @ 20:43
So sorry to hear about your disappointing meal Jan Duck stir fry is one of our best sellers when its on the special board i think you must of had a random duff one even i make mistakes sometimes. Hopefully this wont put you off visiting us again if you do let yourself known to me and i will sort something out for you.

We've enjoyed numerous meals at the White Horse, but felt really let down recently after the board outside advertised 'daily fresh ventnor cod £5'. We ordered it only to be told on paying the bill that £5 was a lunch-time deal and were charged menu price, despite no restrictions on the advertising still outside at 7pm. The sign is still there so don't be deceived, we were told by the manageress that the outside board is just for advertising and drawing people in and not actual cost in the pub, you need to check the menu.

We had Sunday lunch. It was OK with prompt service, large portions but a bit run of the mill really. Doesn't compare to the Taverners up the road in Godshill.

re beaglefield's review - you can't get fresh cod from Ventnor, because there aren't any cod in the English Channel -it's too warm. They come from the North Sea.

Curious mistake for a pub/restaurant to make.
13/02/09 @ 19:19
GJ,

Curious that a poster of your obvious high standards doesn't think there are any cod in the vicinity of IoW waters......!!

The link I have posted must lead to the most spectaculary unsuccessful Cod fishing tournament ever held!

GJ I've eaten cod from around these waters and very nice it was too!
You've missed out!
13/02/09 @ 23:20
GJ I can assure you that the cod is purchased from ventnor haven fisheries and is of very good quality if you have any doubt in that i suggest you give them a call on 01983 852176. Also like to add I myself have caught plenty of cod from the IOW waters, you really should come give it a try.

Without a doubt the best pub on the island for eating out in. Been there last tuesday which is steak night, they do a 64oz steak 'WoW' not that i could eat that. Also been there on a sunday,Roast dinners are really good and big with a selection of 5 vegetables and real yorkshire puddings. The menu is massive i think its about 15 pages long with homemade dishes being the priority. This place is at the top of my list for pubs to eat out in AMAZING!

Just had a fabulous meal at the White Horse, Chicken breast with brie, bacon and cranberry topping. A really scrummy combination of flavours, beautifully presented. Os had ox liver in a rich sauce. Isle of Wight liver beautifully cooked. Portions were just right. Veg perfectly done in particular the cauliflower 10/10. All washed down with excellent 49er beer.Excellent service and full marks to the waitress, Suzie.
This was a restaurant quality meal, a cut above your average pub grub but at a fraction of the cost of a 'restaurant'.

My family and I have been going to the White Horse in Whitwell for a number of years
and we eat out all over the island and I can honestly say no one does a Roast Dinner like The White Horse @ Whitwell.
The Trio was the best + Lovely huge Yorkshire Pudding and lovely Roast Potato's
and the dinners were massive (unlike most pubs)
Jerrie will you be running another pub?

Was speaking to the new landlord yesterday and the place is still running as strong as ever, He said that the Head Chef that was there for the last 3 years working for jerry has been kept on to manage the kitchen. We ate there and the food was amazing as always, and better still the prices have been reduced so you cant go wrong there. So thumbs up again and good luck to jerry and hayley with there new venture. Ill be back there again soon.

As i had heard the white horse inn had changed hands, i decided to go in and see if the food and service would be the same top quality as before. When my parner and i arrived we were delighted to see all the staff were the same and also the chefs were too. We had a look at the new menu and to our suprise most of the prices have been reduced quite sufficiently and the choices on the specials board were enough to make your mouth water!!! We had to be put on the waitlist at the bar straight away as it was so busy, even though it was only mid week, but we didn't mind at all as the atmosphere in there was so good we enjoyed a lovely drink and chat with the new bar manager, Suzie and landlord, Adam, who both were very friendly & efficient even though they were so busy! After a short wait we were seated in the main bar, which has all been repainted, which was nice to see (much better than the ghastly yellow walls before), then quite promtly after ordering, our meals came out and we honestly couldn't fault a thing! the portions are still as big as ever even with the reduced prices, and the quality of the food was just fantastic. We were also given a loyalty card, so once you've had 10 meals you can get 1 free, i know it wont take long to fill mine in! So all in all we were definately glad we decided to go back and try it again with the new owners. We will most certainly be back very soon, and i'd recommend the place to anyone, there really is so much choice you just cant go wrong. Well done to all the staff who have succeeded in keeping the standards so high.

Visited White Borse today, knocking off pubs one by one on our tour the island eateries adventure. Arrived at 1.10 finally got 2 sandwiches and one ham egg and chips an hour later. In this time 2 people left disgusted , having been told their meal was ready finally but the brown bread had run out, and the nice lady had specifically requested brown, then we realised we had too ! Another disgruntled family said they would make allowances for new owners..
Food was ok, ham off the bone, two tasty fried eggs, my wife's tuna was tasteless and unimaginatively presented, but if you like chips and buckets of them , this is the place for you !Reminded me sowmewhat of the Spyglass without the sea view.
Good menu choice but odd assortment of mismatched furniture
Cant help thinking the new owners need to step outside and walk back in, something is missing from the recipe here, a liitle more appeal and warmth in the dining araes, a few more pictures on the wall, and much fatser serviced or at least an apology for the expected delay when ordering

After hearing loads of people recommend the White Horse lately, apparently new owners I decided to take my family over to check it out. What a great experience - we had delicious food, really friendly service and it wasn't expensive at all! We were given a loyalty card which had buy 10 mea;ls and get one free on it (we love freebies) and were told by Adam (the new landlord) about a new Gold Loyalty card for Island residents coming soon - Put my name down please!!!
All in all a really lovely meal - genuinely nice people and a happy clean pub!
We'll be back very soon !!!!!

Took the family on holiday to the Isle of Wight for a week and ended up eating there for most of the week. Wonderful is the word I would use to describe the White Horse; the staff were friendly and attentive and the food was tasty and in huge portions. We're already planning next years holiday, so to the staff of the White Horse I would like to say thank you and see you next year.
