Hare and Hounds, Arreton

The Island's (and possibly the world's) only capital punishment theme pub, the Hare and Hounds nestles picturesquely in the shadow of a nearby gallows hill. In the pub it is hard to avoid the gruesome story of child-killer Michal Morey - his reputed skull grins cheekily at you as you enter the bar, and writing on the pub's walls tells the tale of his crime, capture and execution.

Appetites remaining steadfastly in place despite the gory folklore, Matt and Cat wound their way through the pub's many rooms and alcoves to table 13, not quite next to the electronic fly killer but a bit too close to a speaker for comfort. Perusing the extensive menu to the lilt of ubiquitous aural wallpaper artist Phil Collins, Matt and Cat were pleased to see a comprehensive range of food. Apart from the Sunday roast for which this rambling family pub is hugely popular, a daily roast is on offer (pork, on the day your reviewers visited) and, for those who do not want a full cooked meal, some more modest items such as sandwiches, baguettes and salads. The prices were not the cheapest, and the drinks in particular were a little more than expected.

Cat, predictably, chose Cajun chicken, described in the menu as "spicy butterfly chicken gently pan fried and served with salad garnish and chipped potatoes". Matt, too, selected chicken - Hawaiian chicken stack, which proved to be a pile of chicken, bacon and cheese which also came with salad garnish and chips.

M and C had been advised by friends that the service at the Hare and Hounds is a bit on the slow side and, with this in mind, they entertained themselves by reading about the further adventures of Michal Morey. They also were obliged to eavesdrop on the cat-obsessed lady at the next table who chuntered endlessly to her companion about the micro-management of her pet's feeding patterns - with a little more detail than was strictly necessary at dinnertime. She sounded like a very elderly lady and Cat was amazed to hear her say at one point "I can't believe I'm going to be thirty next month". Turning round for a quick glance, Cat was faced with a pretty young woman - doubtless her cat loves her!

After about half an hour, the meals arrived. Cat stared agog at her "gently pan fried chicken" which looked as though it had been cremated.

On further examination, what seemed like a crust of charcoal was in fact the Cajun sauce. The 'garnish' turned out to be a pretty good salad with two types of fruit, plenty of foliage, fresh tomatoes and crunchy strips of red and orange pepper. Matt's Hawaiian stack had a very nice lean piece of bacon, moist chicken, cheese and pineapple which added a pleasing contrast to the meat. Both meals came with a generous portion of chips.

The application of salad dressing, mayonnaise, ketchup and vinegar helped the plentiful dinners go down. Matt and Cat guzzled away and smacked their satisfied chops at the end of the meal.

Expecting to be disappointed in this machine of Sunday lunches and Mothering Sunday capacity crowds, M and C were pleasantly surprised. The wait was a bit long, but not finger-tappingly long, and the food was good; well-presented and fresh. No wonder the skull is smiling.

Hi, we have eaten here 3 times. The first as the setting is so lovely, the second to see if the food was still as bad as the first as maybe we just chose a bad day for the chef, and the third just to see if it was still as bad as the others, and it was. We haven't had a good meal here yet and won't now as we will never return. Also, the bar staff were not something to write home about.

Once was enough for us. The worst food that we have ever eaten anywhere in the world and that includes Mexico. We couldn't even imagine ever going back. We have to agree about the bar staff. When we tried to return our undrinkable vile corked wine, we stood in front of an empty bar for 10 minutes and finally gave up leaving the glasses beside our uneaten slop.

Also they don't allow dogs and did not look amused when we suggested that they change the name to "The Hare".

We have visited the Hare and Hounds twice in the last two weeks and on both occasions had really lovely meals. The service was good (once on a Sunday where the carvery takes over the whole pub and most tables in the top bar are reserved) and again midweek when we sampled the Big Tenner meal whereby you get two courses for two people for £10. It was faultless and again the service was good. The bar service was exceptional as the barMAN could multi-task and that's something the male of the species is not renouned for. So well done H&H, I would thoroughly recommend a visit. Forget the previous people who left comments. What do they know?!!

had the misfortune to eat at the hare & hounds on saturday 6 dec 2008. drinks are over the top price wise. Food is nothing to write home about. Steak and ale pie was inedible,
bangers and mash - why do they hane to deep fry sausages and use powdered mash potato ???. Not a place to return to in a hurry.

Tried the carvery last Wednesday (being the £3.50 special) to see how it compared to the Sloop. Although it was good value and a nice change to have pork, I found the selection of veg not as varied as the Sloop (no peas for example). However, it was on the whole a good meal for the money so no complaints.

Tried the carvery with my family. Nearly needed a skin graft after using the serving utensils. The carvery was ok but nothing special, even at £3.95.
Service of puddings was slow and the attitude of the assistant manager when I made a complaint about my second cold serving of treacle pudding was awful.
The attitude of the manager was even worse.
Would not eat there again and would not recommend to anyone I liked.

Went to Hare and Hounds last sunday for their sunday carvery and was blown away by how tasty the meal was! My family had the beef and I had the pork and stuffing. The yorkshire puds were huge, the roast potatoes crispy and the meat was lovely and tender (even had my fave veg - cauliflower cheese!)
The queue waiting to be served is a little precarious as it is at the top of some steps and I got very worried about a few oldtimers struggling back to their seats with their very full plates! But other than that I would definately recommend it.
I can't believe anyone has written a bad review about this place, maybe they havent been to the SUNDAY carvery? We LOVED it!

My parents and I have have just been to The Hare and Hounds for lunch.
We ordered soup and a garlic and herb bread.
We waited for over 35 minutes, the pub was very quiet hardly any customers.
The soup came out in a dessert dish with triangles of supermarket brown coloured white bread, with dobs of hard butter plonked on 2 of the slices.
The soup was cold and even worse it was packet soup, uggggg.
I sent mine back and to be fair the young lady was very polite and gave me the money back.

The garlic bread had very little garlic in it and it was advertised with rocket leaves, they were however baby spinach leaves.

We then were told that it was a Green King pub and they had to serve what they were told.

So folks avoid Green King food outlets unless you are happy to pay for and wait for packet soup!!!

We visited your carvery last Sunday evening with our three grandchildren around 5.15pm after having done so once before. We purchased our drinks and paid for the carvery as we were pushed for time so didn't inspect it.It was so disappointing. The carved beef was sitting in gravy and the whole appearance apart from the cauliflower cheese was so unappealing. My husband didn't realise that the cutlery was on the table and went to the cutlery basket. He had to pick over to find clean polished cutlery and wipe them with a serviette. It had been put through the dishwasher (hopefully) and just dumped. The roast potatoes looked very good but the centre was hard as was the caulifower. No one came to check that we were happy with our meal.We often visit the Sloop carvery and think you could take a leaf out of their book. It's always being topped up and table checks are made. No one came and collected our plates. The duty manager should also check for safety reasons that all the car park lights are on.

Visited Hare & Hounds Carvery with my mother last Sunday lunch. What a digrace!! Only 2 meats. 1 very blackened side of roast beef and 1 remains of a piece of dried up pork which it was imposibble to get any slices from. The veg and potatoes all very tired. The staff (we saw very few)looked and behaved sloppy with no apparent supervision. No supervisor/manager semmed to be present. Never again.

Please avoid this place at all costs! I have eaten here more than once, much to my shame, and each time it has been worse. Why have I made more than one trip here when it's so bad? Because it's such a lovely looking building from outside, it has wonderful views, it's well located, and I am willing to give a place a second chance. How wrong am I! The food is poor quality, badly prepared and over priced. The service leaves a lot to be desired, and the number of covers the place tries to provide for when full is excessive for the ordering system. I drive past this particular establishment almost daily, and am frequently amazed at how full the car park is (I can't imagine much of it is returning trade); when sat waiting at the traffic lights out front I have frequently had the urge to shout out and warn the poor, unsuspecting souls entering the place of the ordeal that awaits them! AVOID! AVOID! AVOID!

On our visit, some time ago, we tried the "two for ten" deal and ordered two portions of fish and chips. Despite very few being in the pub at the time, we waited quite a while. When it arrived, we thought the portions rather small - the battered cod was not much bigger than a fishcake. On the whole, a below average experience.

We had a truly appalling meal here. My ham was kinda green and warm, and was, along with the meals of my two fellow-visitors, competed for by an assortment of insects! It also took around 55 minutes to arrive, despite the place being virtually empty. Certainly wouldn't return, even to find out if we had hit an 'off-day'. To be fair, four of us ate there some three years back, and had a very different experience.

Having not visited this pub since arriving to live on this lovely island some seven years ago, my Wife and I thought it was about time we did.
Last Monday we arrived at around 1 p.m. to find an almost empty car park, suprising having passed 5 very busy pubs on the way.
On entering the sparsely populated restaurant, we had plenty of choice of tables to choose from. We sat at one, but instantly realised it was right under a "musac" speaker, so walked across to a far corner to seek some comparative peace:
No luck, speaker over this table also; as it was over that one; and that one; and that one! Right across the place!
Reluctantly therefore we returned to our first choice, a bright sunny table, resolving to "grin and bear it".
Reaching for a menu each we buried our heads in them, but within one minute we just looked at each other; the noise was intrusive, inescapable, and unbearable.
We had no choice but to get up and leave.
What an appalling shame to so plaster your establishment with intrusive speakers everywhere.
We reluctantly trudged off and drove to the next pub on our route home, The Chequers.
There we parked up, locked the car, walked in through the door to be greeted by.......... Music!!!!
BUT here, how different, from a few unabtrusive speakers hidden in the corners, emitting quiet soft soothing sound. Just enough to kill the dead empty sound of a room, soft enough to not intrude on a quiet conversation, totally unlike the "beat your brain to a pulp" of the Hare and Hounds.
(Oh, and the food we then got? Slight wait for it, but a very decent meal which we thoroughly enjoyed)

I thought that we were lucky that there were so few people there at 1pm on a Sunday for a carvery, I should have known better. I have never in my life had such a tasteless meal.It wasn't cheap but it was nasty. The turkey was OK ish but the deep fried potatoes and the yellow broccoli were truly horrific. The rest of the meal was completely bland, the cauliflower had never seen cheese and the gravy- well all I can say was it was wet and brown. They will never see one penny of my money again.
