French Franks, St Thomas' Square, Newport

French Franks is a filled baguette and sandwich shop catering for the lunchtime shopper and those on a jolly from work. You can also sit down in it should you so wish, although Matt and Cat have yet to try this - partly because it's not that big and at lunchtime you might end up poking your baguette into someone's eye.

It is situated in one of the more attractive areas of Newport, and makes good use of its pleasant central location near the main church. The food is of the freshest and tastiest, with delicious crunchy baguettes filled with just about anything you can imagine. Matt's favourite, coronation chicken, is always good, with the fresh salad option making it almost possible to imagine that it is healthy eating. The massive queues are intimidating at first, but when you see the speed with which French Franks can dish out the pastrami and stilton (or whatever) you won't mind a few moments delay.

Recommended for a quick bite on the hoof whilst wandering the streets of Newport.

Scary. Popped in here t'other day, all clean and good prices and choice of baguettes, then it all took a scary turn, the boss started rushing around asking for more staff, there were only three of us..then asking for our cash before we had even finished ordered our sandwiches all of a sudden there were four staff badgering us for our order, not giving us a chance to look at the menu hanging above their heads, the loos were through the kitchen...and it was not too tidy back there, the place was freezing in temperature and ambiance.

French Franks urgently needs an update review from Matt and Cat before the summer ends as it has been under new management for about a year only.

We started going recently and often, morning to late afternoon. Ingredients are spectacularly fresh and tasty, and you can combine them as you wish. The service is great, friendly and amusing (maybe disregard reviews to the contrary), and nothing is too much trouble. There are tables outside for smokers and dogs. The coffee is the very best we've had on the Island outside one or two top-rate hotels. Prices are very reasonable, the range is huge, and everything seems genuinely very fresh an home-made. The small baguettes are largish and the large require a doggy bag. My friend and her dogs (when the dogs get the chance) agree that the crisps are the best they've ever tasted. The meal deals are a snip (baguette/bagel/sandwich/wrap + drink + crisps fruit).

Why go anywhere else for a Newport snack lunch?

The website is worth a look:
