Mr Chips, Oakfield

Note: Mr Chips has long closed and been replaced by Corrie’s Cabin.

Ryde has not one High Street, but two. Not only that, but the street which most visitors call the High Street is actually not the High Street at all. But enough of that. In the lesser of the two real High Streets are now only a very few shops. This backstreet is actually in Oakfield, just off the main road that goes through Ryde St Johns. One of those shops is Mr Chips, which, as the name suggests, is a very straightforward shop. Basic fish and chip shop fare is on offer at cheap prices. There’s also the delightful Mr Chips logo which gives a flavour of the entire establishment:

With a logo like that – and the slogan to match – you just can’t go wrong. What you see is what you get with Mr Chips, and Matt is happy to recommend their generous portions as a decent enough local chippy.

And no, he’s not even going to mention James Hilton.
