Sunday cake breaks

With the sun still doing its best to break through, a relaxed Sunday afternoon at #iow2016 calls for a a thorough testing of the sweet treats on offer. It’s a tough job but someone’s gotta do it.

We started with flapjack and cortados at Craft Coffee, past Strawberry Fields towards Penny Lane. Acceptable but not a patch on @kajcox’s usual Piccolo apparently.

Because she’ll “take a fig bar over a carrot cake but nothing beats a chocolate brownie” there was only one choice for our next pitstop. Kitty’s Cake Emporium served a good brownie for £4 although we’d have preferred a smaller slice for a better price. @kajcox and @tulatinkletoes ended up sharing the gooey glob.

@sparklypips opted for firm favourite Los Churros Amigos chocolate churros. If melted chocolate and sugary doughnuts sticks don’t make you happy then I can’t help you. £4 for 6 or £6 for 9 (unless you’re sharing, stick to the regular portion to avoid diabetes).

Saturday Dinner

On the hunt to find a food to absorb the vats of beer and cider, we bimbled around Octopus Gardens on the hunt for carbs. All the carbs.

Settling on Greek Expectations (pun presumably intended), @sparklypips went for steak and halloumi ciabatta. It didn’t need the extra squeeze of mayo applied. Steak very tender, three slices of crisped cheese; the perfect antidote to an afternoon spent in the company of Bulmers and friends. £7 the lot.

Parting ways @b33rdy and @kajcox headed for Rok Kitchen, offering a variety of Korean street food. The Bi-bim-bap satisfied our part-time veggie (maybe a little pricey at £7 considering lack of meat component) and had the rest of the group salivating from the smell.

It’s a quieter show than usual but #iow2016 is winning at food so far this year.

Saturday Lunch

Lunch at Papa Legba’s Smoke Shack, in the back by the Cirque De La Quirk stage on Saturday.

Not even a backing track of performance poetry could put @b33rdy off his Chick-a-Boo brioche bun. He inhaled a generous heap of shredded chicken in a brioche bun, with bonus jalapeño mayo, in record time.

Fellow spice addict @kajcox gave the Veggie Hoodoo version the thumbs-up too. It almost compensated for the mysterious disappearance of the Peacock’s chickpea curry at this year’s festival.

At a bargainous £7 and £6 respectively, a good choice to awaken your taste buds on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
